The use of AI in trading has been slowly evolving for years, but significant change is underway. Once limited to supporting human traders by analyzing charts, processing data and summarizing stories, AI is increasingly doing it for itself.

Over the past year, major exchanges and trading platforms have begun to release agent-based systems that can implement multi-step trading strategies without ongoing human input. This is accelerating at the same time that trading rates in all crypto and algorithmic markets continue to rise, increasing both complexity and speed of execution. We are entering the era of AI agents that can directly participate in decision making. This change is largely driven by machines that enable people to work in a more flexible way and processing power.

Trading follows a similar path. What started as an algorithmic support turned into a system of agents with their own unique behaviors and interests. As these tools move from testing to live trading environments, an important question arises: can AI agents operate in real-world markets reliably, transparently and securely?”

From data processing to decision making

Early AI trading systems were designed for data processing and interpretation. Their strengths were scanning market movements, integrating signals and identifying patterns. But the analysis alone confirms the performance. Markets don’t just work with logic and math. Changing narratives and crowd behavior introduce instability and predictability, and any system operating in this environment must deal with that instability. This is the focus of modern AI marketers and their behavior. Performance is not just about speed or signal acquisition. It depends on something close to attitude and personality traits.

In controlled situations, inconsistencies in data or infrastructure may be controlled. In live markets, there are none. For AI systems to be trusted for autonomous decision-making, they must work reliably. They cannot be a workaround that is placed on top of existing infrastructure or that work in weak or unclear ways.

The more we examine this, the more clear it becomes that designing and shaping the behavior of an AI marketer is human-like. Just like human traders, different programs show different “conditions”. Two models using the same data may behave very differently depending on how they are configured.

Why is it important to trade “personality”.

This is where the concept of human-based AI trading comes from. It starts with a simple fact: people approach decisions very differently. Human traders vary widely in their risk appetite, tolerance and response to stress. There is no one-size-fits-all strategy, so no AI model fits all users or market conditions.

The alternative, then, is to take a more flexible approach and make AI agents more flexible. Financial markets are inherently unstable, and a system designed to trade in calm conditions can become inherently difficult during turbulent fluctuations. One agent may prioritize stability and low-frequency performance, while another may accept high flexibility. And so on, so on.

Human-based AI trading addresses this issue by shifting the focus from the “best model” to identifying the “best behavior.” System designers can create agents with unique performance styles, ensuring better alignment with user expectations.

One of the persistent challenges in AI adoption is trust. Users are often wary of using systems whose logic of operation they cannot understand or predict. Users evaluate AI systems not only for technical features, but also for how well those systems fit their preferences. This discomfort is often magnified when the mechanisms behind AI systems remain unclear. The transparency of AI is not limited to explaining the results, but also how the agents access the data, perform actions and interact with the market infrastructure.

A person-based approach helps to bridge this gap. If the agent’s behavior is clearly defined, human users can better anticipate how it will behave. AI decisions gain context instead of feeling haphazard and confusing. In this way, “humanity” forms a bridge between machine thinking and human comfort, providing psychological benefits alongside technology. Marketers are more likely to trust and work effectively with AI agents whose behavior matches their preferred decision-making process.

Self-control and adaptability often overcomes anger

A notable insight from the experiment is that strategies that emphasize stability and persistence tend to yield stronger performance. In dynamic situations, moderate approaches often outweigh aggressive ones.

This challenges the popular assumption that confidence and speed are better. In uncertain markets, restraint can be very important, and well-designed AI systems are very good at enforcing that kind of discipline. Machines don’t get impatient, rush to lose or react emotionally to noise. The important lesson to take away is not that AI agents are inherently superior, but that cognitive biases among human traders can be costly. AI systems are not particularly immune to these pressures.

At the same time, AI vendors can gradually improve over time. While initial performance may be modest, flexible systems can adapt to changing conditions, detect shifts and readjust risk management strategies. This adaptability is a key source of resilience in dynamic markets.

What AI vendors are teaching us

Perhaps the most important takeaway is that AI in trading should not be viewed as a quick fix. It acts as a mirror that reflects one’s decisions. Different users and market conditions require a different AI environment. Flexibility and alignment with human goals become key design principles. By looking at what AI behaviors are successful, we gain insight into what qualities are most important in complex systems and uncertain markets.

In that sense, the rise of commercial AI is gradually reshaping the way we think about decision-making itself. And that might be the biggest change of all. Every trader should be able to customize their AI tools to best suit their preferences.
