Tragedy Writer Kouri Richins Sentenced to Life Without Parole

Tragedy writer from Utah Kouri Richins sentenced to life in prison without parole after being convicted of murdering her husband.

Richins, 35, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole during a hearing Wednesday, May 13, according to NBC News.

She received her sentence after being found guilty in March of aggravated murder, attempted aggravated murder, fraud and forgery over her husband’s death. Eric Richinson March 4, 2022.

After her death, Richins told investigators that she and her husband were celebrating a business deal when they found her unresponsive in their home.

However, the medical examiner eventually determined that he had five times the lethal dose of fentanyl in his system and that the drugs had been ingested orally. It was later determined that Richins laced her husband’s drink with fentanyl.

He spoke to his three sons during the trial, which comes after he said in his victim impact statement that he would feel unsafe if he was released.

“I will never resent your feelings,” he said, adding that he had been trying to connect with them for years. “All I care about is you guys.”

Richins also accused her late husband’s family of being responsible for her lack of contact with her sons.

“You guys are my world, the reason I keep waking up every day and fighting to get home,” she said, at the store. “I promise you guys one day it will pass.”

Richins added that he “did a lot of things that I’m not proud of” and told his children that “no one is good or bad.” He continued, “We are not defined by our best or worst moments.”

Additionally, he encouraged his siblings to always protect each other, help others and put their own happiness first. “Be like your father,” he said with tears in his eyes.

After passing sentence, the District Judge of the State Richard Mrazik he said he struggled with what was best for Richins’ sons when he made the decision.

“It’s impossible for anyone, even those young men, to know how their views on this case may evolve over the next few decades,” said Mrazik. “I hope that everyone affected by the death of Eric Richins will eventually find a way to a state of peace.”

Richins’ attorneys added that they plan to file for a new trial, according to NBC News.

After her husband’s death, Richins became a local celebrity when she published a children’s book called Are you there with me? In the book, he opened up about his grieving process after death.
