Days of Our Lives has Marlena Evans (Deidre Hall) looking back on her time in Salem as Deidre Hall celebrates her 50th anniversary on the NBC soap. This week, his first broadcast date is on Days of Our Lives it was June 21, 1976. Can you believe that?

And on a fun side note, two other current long-running soap stars are also on Days. Susan Seaforth Hayes has been playing Julie Williams for 58 years and counting. And Suzanne Rogers has played Maggie Horton for about 53 years. All these are impressive moments as soap actors.

And this week we have Marlena looking at a photo album with her and John Black on the cover. Her son Paul Narita (Christopher Sean) returned to Salem this week and surprises Marlena. If you’ve seen the latest episodes, you know this. Then Belle Black (Martha Madison) also shows up and Marlena says she’s taking a little trip down memory lane and Belle wants to go along for the ride.

Days of Our Lives: Marlena’s Rise as a Salem Icon (1976-1986)

So, I thought we should take a trip down memory lane, too. Let’s take a look at some of Marlena’s favorite moments Days of Our Lives fans let them know. Starting when Deidre Hall first arrived and stayed for ten years from 1976 to 1986 is what we will call Marlena’s rise as a Salem icon. Marlena Evans came to town as a psychiatrist in June of 1976. Mickey Horton (John Clarke) was here at the time and Marlena soon became smitten with Don Craig (Jed Allan). They got married for a while and she got pregnant and gave birth but she lost her firstborn.

And fans may recall that during her early years on the show, Marlena was also stalked by the Salem Strangler. And she met and married Roman Brady (Josh Taylor). Roman has been protective of her and they fall in love. And then Marlena turned up pregnant with their twins, Eric Brady (Greg Vaughan) and Sami Brady (Alison Sweeney). But during Marlena’s first ten years in Salem, Roman was presumed dead due to the interference of Stefano DiMera (Joseph Mascolo).

Next, Marlena fell in love with John Black, an amnesiac, who later thought he was Roman. The early to mid 80s in Salem was a dramatic time for Marlena with a horrific window fall, fainting spell. And the supposed plane crash that led to his departure.

Days of Our Lives: Dramatic Returns and Supernatural Horrors (1987-1996)

Deidre Hall’s next decade is on Days from 1987 to 1996 was a time of incredible returns, popular love, and supernatural fear. Because the late 80s to mid 90s were some of the worst times in Salem. It’s more dangerous than most modern soap opera viewers have seen. After Marlena survives her coma and is imprisoned by Stefano, she returns for an emotional, painful reunion with John Black.

But this is where the whole love triangle between John and Roman started after it was discovered that the real Roman Brady was still alive. The connection between Marlena and John, though, seemed strong. Because Marlena and John had a loving relationship. This happened while she was still married to Roman. And young Sami Brady caught them in the act. And that’s when her little sister Belle got pregnant.

My father’s scandal rocked the whole family for years to come. And when it came out that Roman was not the father with John, which led to the inevitable separation of Marlena and Roman Brady. But one of the most famous soap moments that is still talked about to this day, is probably the best known episode of Deidre Hall. Days of Our Lives be Queen of the Night the story and plot of the devil.

We saw Stefano drug Marlena and he was full of horror movie style The Exorcist. And finally, there was an amazing exorcism by Father John Black. Lots of chaos, mind control, and possession. But in the end, true love won.

Days of Our Lives: Mayhem, Weddings, and the Salem Stalker (1997-2006)

Marlena’s next decade from 1997 to 2006 saw chaos, marriages, and the Salem Stalker. This time we saw Marlena in a relationship with John. And we’ve had Kristen DiMera’s (Stacy Haiduk) schemes, multiple marriages, and breakups, kidnappings. And other DiMera threats.

In 2003 to 2004, the Salem Stalker terrorized the citizens of Salem. And Dr. Marlena Evans was built for a death that never really happened. All this was one of Stefano’s tricks. But one of epic proportions. Not all serial slayer victims are dead. But they were on a private island, Melaswen, which is New Salem spelled backwards. This was a great measure of this Days of Our Lives.

And in the same decade, Marlena had to navigate the ongoing drama of her older children, Belle and Eric and Sami. In addition, Marlena was connected to all of Salem in her role as a well-known psychiatrist who specialized in speech therapy with hypnotherapy skills as well.

Days of Our Lives: Family, Out, and Back (2007-2016)

Deidre Hall’s next season, 2007 to 2016, was one where the focus was on family and the out and back. So in 2008 there was a huge budget cut on the NBC soap and that led to the firing which caused a lot of fan backlash. So, that saw Marlena and John both leave Salem when Drake Hogestyn and Deidre Hall were both released. But they came back in 2011 to surrender Horton Town Square. Marlena and John eventually build a good life together, including grandchildren and the discovery that Paul Narita was John’s biological son. And of course, Marlena really loved John’s son, Brady Black (Eric Martsolf), as if he were her own.

Just as Marlena takes care of Carrie Brady (Christie Clark), the offspring of Roman and Anna DiMera (Leann Hunley). All the while, with personal issues and family drama, Marlena had to deal with the constant conflict between the Bradys and the DiMeras. And he accepts John’s drawn future. So, Marlena weathered all these storms with style and grace and dignity. He was always a fierce opponent if you messed with him or his family.

Days of Our Lives: Legacy, Tragedy, and 50 Years of Excellence (2017-2026)

The ten years that we are bringing now is 2017 to 2026 and that includes inheritance, tragic loss, second stock. And to celebrate Deidre Hall’s landmark 50th birthday Days of Our Lives. So the last 10 years for Marlena was very much focused on her beautiful couple who paired with John at times showed a supernatural bond between them. From family weddings to vow renewals, deaths and disappearances, all have been part of Marlena’s journey from a young woman determined to help the people of Salem to the beloved matriarch of the town today.

Now many fans are groaning in 2021 when the writers bring back the second story of the devil involving Marlena. He didn’t end up being possessed by spirits. But the devil also took his dear friend Doug Williams (Bill Hayes) and his grandson Johnny DiMera (Carson Boatman). When the devil was cast out of Salem again, we got the sad news that Drake Hogestyn has pancreatic cancer. I Days of Our Lives the actor lost his battle on September 28, 2024.

But before he became seriously ill, Drake had given the thumbs up to the series Days of Our Lives The writers came up with the death of John Black’s character. And in fact, Drake was still alive when they filmed his character John’s death Days. That aired on June 2, 2025, 8 months after Drake’s death. So, John Black died on screen with Marlena by his side. But another actor playing a role, his face is hidden by thick bandages. And so, John risked his life one last time. And he died a hero, saving his erstwhile brother-in-law, Bo Brady (Peter Reckell).

A sad milestone in DOOL

And a few weeks ago, Marlena, Brady, and Belle had a special day when it was the first day of John’s death. And now Marlena, Belle and Brady along with Chad DiMera (Connor Floyd) and Theo Carver (Tyler Joseph Andrews) investigate the chess set Stefano left for John and Marlena. This is the last sick game that Stefano plays beyond the grave.

Marlena’s evolution from fledgling psychiatrist to celebrity couple and supernatural survivor has been so much fun to watch over the years. Deidre Hall portrays her character as strong with strong family ties. And while this soap is no stranger to reruns, I don’t think anyone can replace the actress who plays Marlena Evans. Maybe this will be the year Deidre Hall finally wins her long overdue Emmy.
