LARRY KUDLOW: Stop the hand-wringing, let Trump do something good for America

There’s a lot of wringing of hands about President Trump’s negotiations and possible dealings with Iran, and it’s coming from friends and foes alike. I think it has more to do with America’s crumbling political infrastructure, than the merits of Mr. Trump.

First of all, this so-called memorandum of understanding is a non-binding political document that simply outlines the topics to be discussed in the coming months in order to reach some kind of final agreement. Some people are taking parts of this MOU completely wrong for their own political gain. Let’s back up for a second.

Last year, starting with Operation Midnight Hammer and continuing with Epic Fury and Economic Fury, the combined forces of the United States and Israel completely eliminated the Iranian leadership, turned their nuclear power into waste, completely buried their enriched uranium, destroyed their air force, destroyed their radar, destroyed many of their missiles, and their drones, and destroyed their entire industrial base. Inflation may run at over 200 percent. Food and medicine for the common people are not available. Money is worthless. The economy was closed. In other words, Iran’s military and economic power has been reduced. And people know this whether they criticize it or not. General Jack Keane noted that we no longer see Iranian speedboats in the Strait of Hormuz.

Meanwhile, Miranda Devine of the New York Post writes that Iranian women in Tehran are now riding motorcycles in skirts and with their hair down, an offense that used to lead to fines, jail time, and brutal beatings. However, the moral police may be dead. Another sign that the radical Islamist Republic is collapsing from within.

Because of the brave actions of Mr. Trump, who is the only president in the last 50 years to go after Iran forcefully and successfully. Its leadership has been beheaded, its military power has been virtually eliminated, and its nuclear activities have been shut down. Everything has been turned into rubbish.

In short, their ability to harm is essentially removed for many years to come without boots on the ground. So, all this gives Mr. Trump is an opportunity to open diplomacy in the future. Why don’t you try? And that leads to at least a temporary suspension of the shipping blockade to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and lower oil prices to stabilize the world economy.

It’s a risk you have to take. I really don’t think there is any risk at all. And not one dime of money will come to Iran unless a final deal with the inspectors ends their nuclear program and their enriched uranium. That is a final agreement, not a non-binding memo.

Even oil money will be deposited into an escrow account by the United States Treasury. And it was issued only to buy the Iranian people food, farm, and medical aid. Mr. Trump said this on the matter: “One of the things we are doing again, and it came out last night, the frozen money will be used to buy food, and the food will be bought in the United States only from our farmers. And corn, beans, all the things that they need will be bought from our farmers.”

That’s the Trumpian way of making a deal. The bottom line is that the president, as he has repeatedly said, will denuclearize Iran, period, full stop, with verification and testing. Mr. Trump is calling for the reliability of nuclear weapons. And if Iran doesn’t play ball, then… We’ll go back to military, bombing, and economic sanctions, and give them more damage if that’s what it’s going to take.

Currently, Mr. Trump made the right decisions. Opinion polls increasingly show a favorable attitude toward his diplomacy and deal-making. So I say, let’s stop this hand twisting and let Mr. Trump did what he does best. That makes America very profitable.
