Editing of Netflix Courses Under Film King Dan Lin

Between 2019 and 2023, Netflix releases several hundred movies each year. The company is involved in the depth of the original film to ensure validation as the new interloper of the industry. But under Dan Lin, who took over as head of streaming film in 2024, Netflix is changing course. In the first three months of 2026, the world’s best-known subscription broadcaster released “only” 23 original movies—that’s an impressive volume compared to older studios, but an eight-year low for Netflix. Executives acknowledge an overlooked truth: streaming isn’t producing original movies the way the industry once thought.
The reality was that many movies on Netflix came and went without any real impact. About one in four films (original and licensed) received 100,000 or fewer viewing hours in each quarter from 2023 to 2025, without registering an audience at all.
Historically, movies that have been successful in broadcasts have generated mixed reviews before fading. Longer TV series, on the other hand, support engagement and drive better retention. An endless stream of movies sounds like an addictive prospect on paper. But they rarely live up to the hype, especially against their theatrical counterparts.
Comparing the nine films on Netflix to the 11 films released in theaters in the same area of previous releases reveals a consistent gap between the two. Theatrical movies outperformed in Awareness, Interest, Intent In Theatrical, Willingness to Pay and other demand metrics, according to Greenlight Analytics, where I work as Director of Data & Content Strategy. That’s not a fault of Netflix’s quality, but an expression of consumer sentiment. Direct-to-stream movies start from a low base again rapid decay.
What the data shows
Long-running series with surprisingly large episode libraries generate the most time spent in the scripted streaming world (procedures, sitcoms, children’s entertainment).
Here are the 10 most watched licensed series in the US last year, one by one Nielsen: Bluey, Grey’s Anatomy, NCIS, SpongeBob SquarePants, Bob’s Burgers, Family Guy, The Big Bang Theory, Law & Order: SVU, Criminal Minds again The Rookie. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had sitcoms on in the background while eating lunch, doing laundry or hanging out during Zoom meetings where I’ve never muted myself once.
The average minutes watched for these shows in 2025 was 33 billion, per Nielsen. Average top 10 streaming songs? 18.2 billion. Both the TV total still dwarfs the average of the top 10 kids’ movies (7.4 billion) and movies for general audiences (4.91 billion).
TV is a habit. Streaming movies are, for the most part, momentary.
Netflix course correction
Netflix’s reduced film volume isn’t just about content budgets and ROI. It’s an acknowledgment that the broadcast business model is built more on TV than film. There’s a reason McDonald’s fries sell better than their McChickens. Netflix’s TV library has generated more viewership than its film library in every single quarter since 2022, according to Parrot Analytics, which tracks crime viewing and social activities.
Theatrical films making their first broadcast are often the first choices when they come in, especially among Gen Z. That’s important. Original streaming films can be event-driven curated releases that feed each other. In January Rip spent seven weeks in the top 10 on Netflix, leading into March War Machinewhich has remained in the Top 10 for five consecutive weeks since its release as of this writing. That’s just good old quality editing. (The action type always applies to broadcast.)
Movies will always be important to culture. But they don’t work well in the subscription model. Red Alert (118 minutes) managed a budget of 200 million and was watched at least 454.2 million hours. All three seasons Squid game (22 episodes totaling 21.37 hours) it is reported that it costs just $91.4 million. The game was watched about 4.48 times a billion hours. The Night Agent Season 1 it is reported that cost up to $30 million and generated 803.2 million viewing hours. Longer run times also create more advertising inventory, which is especially important in Los Gatos.
Last year, three of the top five Netflix titles watched by low-spending subscribers worldwide at high risk of cancellation were TV series (Squid game season 2, The American Primeval, Squid game Season 1), per Digital i. (Original films Go ahead again Back to Action they were also in the top five). That study also revealed that only one film, KPop Demon Hunters, ranked in the top 15 primetime titles across Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+.
You will tell me which is the best investment overall.
Netflix (rightfully) isn’t leaving out movies; it’s about right-sizing its content strategy, especially since live events and sports eat up a lot of your budget. Streams reward extended stays, not short-term flights. Film will always be the best way to launch financially profitable multimedia franchises that have spawned TV extensions. Netflix knows this better than most as a home Cobra Kai, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, XO, cat, two different ones Jurassic World series of children, two different ones Baby Baby series, and many more.
Streaming didn’t remotely kill movies. It simply reduces their value within the new business model. Netflix simply changes its strategy based on the results.
