A Funny TV Show Will Change The Way You Think About Education

If you spend as much time scouring Hulu for the best binge-worthy TV shows as I do, you’ve probably come across your fair share of duds. Some shows don’t have the writing chops to really make you laugh, some don’t have enough talented actors to have staying power, and some are victims of early cancellations before they hit the ground running. Fortunately, I won’t need to watch the new show for a while, because I have five seasons of the show. Abbott Elementary that I can watch over and over until I die.

I’m not trying to guard it when I say Abbott Elementary it might be the funniest show on TV. On paper, it doesn’t seem like the kind of thing I’d be interested in, but after taking a chance on the ABC sitcom, I’m completely hooked. I first became aware of this program last year when they were working with it It’s always sunny in Philadelphia producing exciting crossover specials. He grew up loving it Always sunnyI sang for the gang, and I played pranks for the teachers and students at Willard R. Abbott Elementary School.

Overqualified and Underrated

In case you haven’t seen it, Abbott Elementary series created by former Buzzfeed contributor Quinta Brunson. Brunson stars as a newly minted elementary school teacher named Janine Teagues, who works at the heart of Philadelphia’s overfunded school system. Through the lens of a mockumentary film crew, we meet a cast of quirky characters, including self-centered principal Ava Coleman (Janelle James), smart and witty kindergarten teacher Barbara Howard (Sheryl Lee Ralph), and straight-laced and over-qualified Gregory Eddie, played by Tyler James Williams of Everyone Hates Chris honor.

Each episode highlights the struggles teachers face, from bus strikes, budget cuts, to worm outbreaks. Brunson created the show as a love letter to some of his teachers from the Philly school system, and he worked hard behind the scenes to make sure the series treated current issues with care. The heart of Abbott Elementary he is best exemplified by middle school teacher Jacob Hill (Chris Perfetti), who always tries to make sure his students have access to clubs and resources that aren’t on the budget. Although obnoxious, stubborn, and unspeakably angry, Jacob always goes above and beyond for his students.

Family Friendly Comedy With Bites

Personally, my favorite characters are Principal Coleman and Melissa Schemmenti (Lisa Ann Walter). The former is a character that sounds like it was written using my exact likeness before the race and gender swap for the sake of legal distinction, while the latter feels like all my sly, Italian aunts from back in Boston. Melissa is an avid Philly sports fan, an avid gambler, and a great teacher when it comes to showing her kids how to buck the system. With endless obstacles in their way, the Abbott team somehow manages to provide their students with the best possible education, and takes the time to address systemic issues with an incredible level of care.

Although the characters are open Abbott Elementary they are very visible, what makes this show so special is its non-stop humor. I’m usually a fan of crude comedy and foul-mouthed actors (a la Always sunny) so I was surprised at how many laughs this family-friendly comedy could get from me. Pound for pound, I’d say I laughed a lot and watched more Abbott Elementary than any other movie, show, or web series. Every line that comes out of Ava’s mouth is a work of art, and Mr. Eddie’s directness to the camera is similar to Jim’s. The office on steroids.

For those who aren’t sure about giving it a spin, I’d say start with episodes like “Attack Ad,” “Read-A-Thon,” or “Smoking.” Almost every episode of this show is a guaranteed banger, but those are some of the episodes that stand out as devastatingly funny.
