Matlock Season 3 Skips Explained After Schedule Change

Matlock It’s not just getting a schedule change – but also a time skip.
“Season 3 will not start directly [after the season 2 finale],” the creator Jennie Snyder Urman he told Deadline. “It will be six months to a year, I would say.
Urman also confirmed this in an interview with TVLine, teasing that Matty (Kathy Batesand Olympia (Skye P. Marshall) will work in a new company.
“It will take a little time to jump: six to nine months, something like that,” he continued. “It’s not like five years have passed and everything has changed. But we’re not people transporting cars, like we were this year.”
Before the end of season 2, that was confirmed Matlock is returning for a third season – but will undergo a schedule change after a “complete reset” of the show.
“I requested it with the network. We had a conversation,” Urman told TV Insider. “I feel like we had a lot of things to think about because we really got on the plane this time, and we thought that was important because we didn’t want to keep putting out the same story, and the characters have to get to a certain place emotionally.”
Urman confirmed that season 2 will wrap up Wellbrexa’s story, meaning a complete “reset” for the series.
“When we took this two-hour finale and paid off a lot of things, what came with that was that I would need time after that to really build the architecture so that we could have it for the next seasons,” he teased. “I’m happy about it, but I’m also thankful because we needed a little time.”
Urman addressed the potential disappointment for viewers, adding, “It’s sad for the audience, but it’s actually good for me and the writers because I want to plan this new mystery and make sure it doesn’t go on air.”
He continued: “We had a lot of pieces we were getting into, so we had to do this new piece. I feel lucky that the network is giving us time to fix it because I don’t want the quality to drop.”
CBS previously announced its schedule on April 15 when viewers saw major changes. Ghosts, Matlock and NCIS: Sydney got a shakeup by having their premieres moved to 2027 mid-season. They will join the new show Einstein, which premieres in 2027.
