On May 18, 2026, McLean was reported missing to the Squamish Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) after he was last seen at his home in Lions Bay, British Columbia three days earlier.
Three days after McLean’s disappearance was investigated as a missing person case, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team stepped in to assist with the search. Police believe McLean may be the victim of a murder.
On May 22, Canada’s integrated homicide investigation team (IHIT) announced in a press release that McLean’s remains were found in the Lions Bay area.
Authorities have not released any suspects in the case or theories about what may have happened to McLean.

Who played Stewart McLean in ‘Virgin River’?
Virgin River it was McLean’s last project before his disappearance. The actor starred in season 7 of the Netflix show, which premiered in March 2026. According to McLean’s IMDB page, he appeared in one episode.

The Squamish RCMP began looking into McLean’s disappearance on May 18, 2026. The next day, police asked for the public’s help in locating the actor as Lions Bays Search and Rescue led the initial search. Two days later, it was revealed that authorities believed McLean was a possible homicide victim.
“On May 20th, IHIT was notified and took the initiative to conduct an investigation. The Squamish RCMP continues to work closely with IHIT and the Integrated Forensic Identification Service (IFIS) to continue the investigation,” the press release said. “The Squamish RCMP began an investigation and, through investigative efforts, found evidence leading investigators to believe that Mr. McLean was the victim of a homicide.”
When was Stewart McLean found dead?
Canada’s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) announced in a press release on May 22 that McLean was found dead in Lions Bay following his disappearance.
His death was also confirmed by Lucas Talent Inc. Jodi Caplanwho shared the gift via Facebook on the same day.
“It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our beloved customer, Stew McLean,” the statement read. “I’ve been fortunate to work with Stew for over 10 years.”
The statement continued: “He was always a joy to deal with – dedicated, professional, determined, and funny. Many casting directors have reached out to express their condolences to Stew’s family and our agency, and all messages say the same thing: what a great guy he really was, and how deeply he will be missed. Rest in peace, Stew. xo”.
