What Do US Marshals Do? Kayce’s Yellowstone Spinoff Job Explained

When viewers were introduced to Kayce (Luke Grimes) to Yellowstonea member of the Dutton family served as a livestock agent and commissioner of the Montana Livestock Association, which allowed him to protect cattle and enforce livestock laws. He also has a background as a former US Navy SEAL.

Kayce’s previous work landed well there The Marshalswhich premiered in March 2026, following his decision to become a marshal. The CBS show follows Kayce as he leaves “a life on the run to join an elite unit” of the US Marshals while “combining his skills as a cowboy and a Navy SEAL to bring justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, work and the high psychological costs that come with serving as the last line of defense in the state’s war on violence.”

So far, Kayce has helped apprehend threats to the public – but what exactly is part of his job description as a US Marshal? The role involves “apprehending federal fugitives, protecting judges, transporting federal prisoners, operating the Witness Protection Program and managing assets seized from criminal enterprises,” according to their official website.

Grimes, 42, has previously thought about the idea of The Marshals before its start.

“I’m my own worst critic,” Grimes told Entertainment Weekly in February 2026. “I was like, ‘If you take a poll of what people want to see in a remake, I don’t know if Kayce will be at the top. I think there are other actors I’d rather see.’

Grimes used that as motivation, adding, “So there was a fire under me. Like, it has to be good. If it’s not good, I better not do it. We tried really hard to make sure that any of the real Yellowstone fans would have something to hold on to.”

He continued: “But if you’ve never seen Yellowstone, we wanted the game to make sense. I think we accomplished that as best we could.”

Despite getting the chance to lead her own show, Grimes wasn’t sure what the story would be.

“They started bringing it up when we were filming the last few episodes of the first series. There started to be offers for a spinoff, and I hadn’t gotten it, and I was like, ‘I think that’s for me,'” Grimes recalled. “Then I got the call and it was like, ‘It’s going to be CBS prime time, and it’s going to be a procedural format.’

The Marshals airs Sundays on CBS at 8 pm ET.
