A social media post asking for “high-wake” moments over the years went viral over the weekend as people posted old clips of Sen. Bernie Sanders, Vt., being interrupted at a Black Lives Matter rally in 2015, a transgender swimmer who won a women’s NCAA title and a “pick your fighter” video with Ocasio-Corporate Repquad member Alexandria.

Ocasio-Cortez, along with other Democrats including Reps. Jasmine Crockett, Lauren Underwood, Katherine Clark, Judy Chu and Susie Lee, participated in the “pick your fighter” video trend on TikTok last year.

The video went viral and was laughed at by both sides of the aisle in March 2025.

Outkick’s Clay Travis flagged Lia Thomas, the NCAA’s 2022 transgender swimmer champion, in addition to two ESPN announcers holding a moment of silence to protest Florida’s bill, which critics call the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, as reported by Yahoo! Sports at that time.

Many also pointed to videos related to the COVID-19 pandemic, including former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot wearing a “Rona Destroyer” costume in 2020.

One social media user posted a clip of former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announcing that people can get Shake Shack fries if they don’t get vaccinated at a daily press conference in May 2021. The promotion also included a voucher for a Shake Shack burger.

In the video, he says, “I want you to look at this and think – again, some people like hamburgers, some people don’t. We really want to respect all lifestyles – but if this appeals to you, just think about this when you think about vaccination.”

After taking a bite of a burger on camera, De Blasio says, “Vaccination. Mmm. I’m getting a really good feeling about vaccinations right now.”

Siraj Hashmi of Townhall wrote in response, “Billy Porter singing ‘For What It’s Worth’ at the 2020 Dem Convention when everything seemed to be due to COVID and the ashes of the George Floyd riots were still smoldering PEAK WAKE.”

Hashmi also pointed to a COVID-related video of celebrities singing John Lennon’s “Imagine” in March of 2020.

A user pointed to a clip of Bernie Sanders being interrupted at a 2016 campaign event by Black Lives Matter protesters.

Two women walked up to the stage where Sanders was speaking and demanded a microphone as one shouted, “We’re angry,” according to NBC News.

After getting boos from the crowd, one of the women said, “I was going to tell Bernie that this town is racist … but he did it for me.”
