Secret Service Responds As 2 People Shot Near White House

The US Secret Service is responding to reports of two people being shot near the White House less than one month after the shooting of White House Correspondents.
“We are aware of reports of shots fired near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW and are working to reinforce information and personnel on the ground. Additional information will be provided as it becomes available,” the Secret Service said on Twitter on Saturday, May 23.
Said a spokesperson for the Secret Service Us Weekly that the agency is “gathering information and will have more on this incident soon.”
“The FBI is on the scene and supporting the Secret Service in responding to the shooting near the White House grounds – we will update the public as best we can,” FBI Director Kash Patel on Twitter after the incident.
CNN reported that reporters on the ground heard gunshots coming from the corner of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest in Washington, DC, and speculated that the shots may have come from the side of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building in the White House.
ABC News White House Correspondent Selina Wang shared a video of his live report coming out of the compound when he was interrupted by what sounded like gunshots. He then goes for a cover before the video cuts out.
“I was in the middle of recording a social media video on my iPhone on the White House North Lawn when I heard a gunshot,” Yang, 33, said on Twitter. “It sounded like a lot of gunfire. We were told to run to the press conference room where they are holding us now.”
Reporters were reportedly told to take cover when they were locked up in the White House press briefing room.

This latest incident happened one month later Cole Thomas Allen allegedly opened fire in the lobby of the Washington Hilton during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on April 25. Allen, 31, allegedly hit a Secret Service agent with gunfire before he was arrested. (The White House later confirmed that the Secret Agent was shot while wearing his protective vest but was taken to a local hospital for treatment.)
The president Donald Trumpfirst wife Melania TrumpVice President JD Vance and several other administration officials were inside the Washington Hilton ballroom at the time of the shooting and were quickly evacuated.
CEO of Turning Point USA Erika Kirk he was seen being rushed to the ballroom in tears after the shooting. Kirk, 37, later called the shooting “another tragic example of the evil in our country and the persistence of political violence.” (Erika’s husband, a conservative activist Charlie Kirkwas shot and killed at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, on September 10, 2025. The 22-year-old man was later charged with aggravated murder, discharging a firearm, obstruction of justice and witness tampering. He has yet to apply.)
After Allen’s arrest, he was charged with attempted assassination of the president, interstate transportation of weapons and discharging a firearm during a violent crime. He pleaded not guilty during a court hearing on May 11.
