It has been more than 30 years since then Ryan Reynolds he was hit by a drunk driver, but he still remembers this painful incident well.
“You know, when I was 18, I left the bar and had a beer, you know, and I went back and looked at my car for a second, and I thought, ‘You know what? I’m not going to drive anywhere,'” said Reynolds, now 49. Rob Mac during a video interview of GQ published on Wednesday, June 10.
“‘Even if it’s four blocks from home, it’s not.’ So instead, I turned around, started crossing the street, and was hit by a drunk driver,” the Deadpool actor recalled of the accident, which happened in his hometown of Vancouver. “I was hit by a drunk driver after making a strong and wise decision for an 18-year-old.”
Reynolds recalled that he spent “four weeks in the hospital” because the collision “broke every bone.” [his] on the left side.”
“He hit me hard, his car was not working,” he added.
Reynolds then joked, “I’d like to thank Dr. Meek from General Hospital for being so kind. Social medicine, he couldn’t say no.”
Using the topic of the interview, the interviewer asked Reynolds, “What’s the best lesson you’ve learned from something that didn’t go the way you planned?”
The Free Guy star replied, “Nothing ever goes the way you plan, I guess, right? Old Chinese proverb, who knows what’s good or bad?”
Reynolds previously spoke about the accident and its aftermath in a 2011 interview CTV News.
“I woke up three days later,” Reynolds recalled, adding that his late father, James Reynoldshe was sitting in his hospital room “holding a cleaning tray.”
“I think I’ve been passing out,” he explained. “And nothing says love like painting someone with three-day-old Gin Rummies. You just drowned the man in my vomit.”
Reynolds joked that he hasn’t been the same since the incident. “I’ve always been a broken mess,” she said.
All things considered, Reynolds’ life and career were successful after that fateful night. The actor, who had previously appeared in a season of the youth drama Hillside (aka Fifteen) and a series of dreams The Odyssey at the time of the accident, he continued to act in hit films including Deadpool franchise, A suggestion (2009), Hitman’s Bodyguard (2017), Red Alert (2021) and more.
On the personal side, Reynolds married an actress Blake Lively in 2012. The two are now parents to children James, 11, Inez, 9, Betty, 6, and Olin, 3.
