The University of Florida intends to move forward with $1.45 billion stadium renovation plans

In today’s day and age of college football, most sponsorships seem to shift to players and their NIL deals.

This was not always the case, however, as there was often a strong emphasis on the “arms race” between college football powerhouses.

Before the NIL, it was customary to direct most of your boosters’ money into new locker rooms, gyms and stadium renovations.

That’s still happening, to some extent, but more and more fans and boosters are switching to a player-centric system, and for good reason.

HOW NAME, IMAGE AND LIKENESS LAWS HAVE CHANGED COLLEGE SPORTS

You have a much better chance of getting a five-star high school kid with a well-funded NIL deal than you do with a fancy upgrade.

All that being said, the University of Florida seems to still have a lot of money set aside for the bananas, as they recently approved a $1.45 billion renovation project for their home stadium, Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

What’s a $50 million NIL budget if you can throw almost $1.5 billion into the stadium?

Yes, I understand that it is not all liquid and much of it will be paid off with financing, long term debt, income generated by projects and so on, but my point still stands.

The rendering also looks cool, too.

FLORIDA COACH JON SUMRALL’S RECENT COMMENTS PROVE HE IS AS PSYCHO AS HIS FANBASE.

The project is expected to be the most expensive stadium renovation in college football history by a wide margin, and it’s easy to see why.

As a Florida fan, my feelings on this, and the feelings of other die-hard Gator fans, are all over the place.

I like the way the platform looks in translation, and having been to Ben Hill Griffin a few times in my life, I can see that some things need improvement.

But The Swamp is also one of the most iconic places in college sports, so I sincerely hope this renovation doesn’t detract from the stadium’s character.

With these changes and the price, it may also come out of the pockets of the fans in the form of increased ticket prices.

That’s just speculation on my part, but I’d hate to see everyday fans get priced out of The Swamp match.

There is also the issue of funding that I keep coming back to.

Obviously, the Gators don’t hurt the wallet when it comes to the NIL, as their recruiting class sits comfortably in the top five on Rivals and 247Sports, and they were able to keep high-value players like Jaden Baugh, Dallas Wilson and Jayden Woods off the leash of other well-funded teams like Texas and Miami.

But wouldn’t it hurt to go a little overboard on stadium development and throw another $10 million a year in the NIL bucket?

Just asking.

Regardless, this project has been in the works for a while, and I’ll be interested to see the finished product, with a rumored 2030 completion date.
