Gov. Gavin Newsom, D-Calif., was the latest prominent Democratic figure on Sunday to endorse candidates endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) as the socialists dominated the primary election.

Newsom told Jack Cocchiarella during a live broadcast on his YouTube channel that he rejects the idea that Socialist candidates are a “threat” to the party, a reference to his past “sanity check” when he ran for mayor of San Francisco in 2003.

“This is all normal, and very healthy,” Newsom said. “I don’t think it’s healthy. So I absolutely reject this idea. And look, I’m for addition, not subtraction. The Democratic Party needs to be in the business of addition if we’re going to get back to the majority. Yes, we need to get our base out there. We have to come up…I’m not offended by this idea of a big tent.”

He continued, “And I think it’s important, anyway, that the big tent is the big tent, because there are people, you know, on this side who don’t want people in that. I think it would be better if we look at the things that bring us together, the things we have in common. And I know that the hygiene tests are going to be harder and harder in the next few years but I’m excited about the success in the next few years. The vibration that’s happening at the grassroots level in this country I think is a very healthy thing.”

Newsom’s comments echoed those of other Democratic Party members who supported welcoming candidates into their “big tent” following the Socialist sweep of the New York primary.

“We have a big tent party, that’s what it says,” Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., told Fox News Digital last month.

“This is democracy,” he continued. “You will have many opinions. It is up to the voters to decide, and do so.”

Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin also told Fox News Digital that he’s “about new leadership” when asked about DSA-backed candidates like Darializa Avila Chevalier and Claire Valdez who defeated the incumbents.

“I actually think the most important advice I would give would be to my fellow executives — which is to create a self-fulfilling prophecy by deciding who these young women are before you meet them,” Ocasio-Cortez told MS NOW.
