Heathrow’s tourism confidence has been hit as Middle East conflicts and rising fares change passenger demand

The latest 1ST Airport Taxis Travel Confidence Index suggests the Middle East conflict, coupled with rising air ticket prices, weakened travel confidence among UK travelers during April, May and June 2026.

While Heathrow Airport only recorded a modest decline in overall passenger numbers during that period, the impact on travel to and from the Middle East was more pronounced. Many survey respondents said they had delayed booking, reconsidered destinations or canceled trips altogether.

Research Highlights

Among 3,200 respondents:

  • Rising air fares have been cited as one of the main reasons for delaying or rescheduling international travel.
  • The political uncertainty of the area has influenced the choice of destination for many travelers.
  • Respondents are more likely to choose European holidays over long-haul destinations affected by the conflict.
  • Families reported becoming increasingly price conscious as all travel costs continued to rise.

Heathrow Traffic Overview

April 2026

April recorded the biggest drop in a three-month period.

According to Heathrow, passenger numbers are down 5.3% year-on-year, reaching around 6.7 million, compared to 7.1 million in April 2025.

Survey Insight

Respondents most often cited:

  • Flight cancellation
  • Regional airspace closures
  • Ticket prices are high
  • Common uncertainties surrounding international travel

May 2026

Passenger traffic was stable but remained 1.2% below the same month last year.

Despite the overall decline, Heathrow recorded its busiest single day for the month of May, driven largely by strong demand for destinations in Europe and Africa. This suggests that many travelers are choosing alternative routes rather than canceling international travel altogether.

Survey Insight

Respondents reported:

  • It changes destinations
  • Booking later than usual
  • You want a low fare
  • Choosing short vacations

June 2026

In June, Heathrow revised its passenger outlook for the remainder of 2026, forecasting traffic around 1.1 percent below expectations, citing continued downward pressure related to the Middle East conflict.

Survey Insight

Many respondents said they intend to:

  • Monitor prices very closely before booking
  • Delay non-essential international travel
  • Choose areas they consider low risk

The Hidden Story: Routes to the Middle East

Although the overall decline in Heathrow passengers remained modest, the biggest impact was concentrated on routes serving the Middle East.

Heathrow’s published traffic data showed:

  • April: Passenger numbers on Middle East routes fell 52.4% year-on-year.
  • May: Passenger traffic remains 31.1% lower than last year.

At the same time, Heathrow has experienced strong demand for routes serving Europe, Africa and the Asia-Pacific region, helping to offset the decline in Middle East services. Passenger transfer numbers also remained relatively stable.

Rising Ticket Prices

Survey respondents identified high ticket prices as a key concern when planning international travel.

One of the contributing factors has been the high cost of jet fuel. Jet fuel typically accounts for 20% to 30% of an airline’s operating costs, meaning that continued increases in fuel prices often result in higher costs for passengers.

The conclusion

The 1ST Airport Taxis Travel Confidence Index suggests that the Middle East conflict has impacted travel behavior far beyond the region itself.

Instead of giving up travel altogether, many UK travelers say they have changed destinations, delayed booking or looked for better value alternatives. Heathrow’s decline in passenger numbers has remained moderate as strong demand on European, African and Asia-Pacific routes has helped offset a decline in flights to and from the Middle East.

How to do it

The 1ST Airport Taxis Travel Confidence Index surveyed 3,200 UK travelers from a sample of 30,000 customers and subscribers. Responses were collected online during June 2026.

Traveler opinions and booking intentions presented in this report are based on survey findings. Passenger traffic figures are taken from Heathrow Airport’s published traffic reviews and investor reports.
