During the season 2 finale, Wagner (Howey) was shot and left bleeding as first responders were called to help. It was not clear if he survived before news broke that Howey, 48, would be leaving the ABC series. Deadline later confirmed that the season 2 finale marked the final episode as a series regular for Howey. Initially, the actor was not expected to return because he signed a one-year contract.
Wagner’s storyline has not been fully fleshed out yet and there is a possibility that Howey could return as a guest star at the beginning of season 3 to wrap up his arc.
Howey previously teased his arc on the show while talking to himself Us Weekly in September 2025, saying, “Nick comes in and ruffles some feathers. But his motivations and his intentions aren’t to do that. He wants to help and we’re starting to see that in different episodes.”
He continued: “That was my fear and my concern. When you have such lightning in a bottle with the potential of these characters, throwing in another character can throw that off. I’m still working on not doing that. This is going to turn into something really cool. We don’t know about the chemistry with Nick and Morgan. Obviously there is [something]. But as he trusts the department more and more, hopefully it will get better and better.”
Howey, on the other hand, is very excited about the opportunity to join one of his favorite shows.
“The first season was amazing. It’s not your normal routine. I love the set shots and I love the style of it. But I have friends in real life who are police officers and part of the sheriff’s department. So I talked to them and they really made me laugh because that’s what they do,” he said. Us. “I take my own approach to who this guy is and that comes from the writers, where his family is from and what he was like in law enforcement and now he is in politics, so he has to prove himself to the department and to himself.
A decision on Wagner’s future in the program will be made after a new runner is found.
