Charlize Theron says her kids won’t get a free ride and ‘need to earn it’

Charlize Theron has made it clear that her children will not grow up with the safety net of Hollywood.
During a candid interview, the Oscar-winning actress shared her parenting style, revealing that she plans to instill independence and strong morals in her daughters from a young age.
“First of all, your first car is going to be a Datsun because you’re going to crash,” Theron said bluntly on the “Therapuss with Jake Shane” podcast. “He’ll fix it one way or another. He’s a new driver. So, we’re not like a good car before. We need a little experience and we’ll get it.”

Theron insisted that financial independence is not a question for her children.
“It’s too soon to say where they will end up… they just need to find a job that pays them because I don’t want to support them for the rest of their lives,” she said.
When asked if her daughters would get summer jobs, she didn’t hesitate.

“Yeah. Every time we go to Starbucks, I’m like, ‘Look at this… You see how friendly you are? You have to be friendly every morning at 6 a.m., like getting ready.”

The actress, who gave birth to daughters Jackson, 12, in 2012 and August, 9, in 2015, has long been open about raising her children as a single mother – a decision she described as very intentional.
In a July 2025 interview with Alex Cooper on the popular podcast “Call Her Daddy,” Theron called her choice “one of the healthiest decisions I’ve ever made.”

“With women, it’s always like there’s something wrong with her. She can’t keep a man, and it’s never part of the conversation like, ‘Wow. She’s really living her truth,'” he said.
Theron didn’t hold back when she described the freedom she found in being a mother in her own way.

“I look at them and I’m like, ‘Do you know how good it is to live the way I want to live, to be the mother I wanted to be?’
He added that “he loves her[s] that I don’t have to run everything with—– it’s a boy” or face the challenges of raising children, noting that she feels she has “broken the cycle.”
