Senate Republicans block war powers resolution as Iran peace deal nears

Senate Republicans have stalled another attempt to curb President Donald Trump’s war authority on Iran as a peace deal begins to take shape.
The latest failed war power resolution, this time from Sen. Raphael Warnock, D-Ga., comes after Trump signed a deal with the Iranian government that could lead to an end to the war. While Congress is still in the dark about the details of the deal, Republicans are standing behind the president on Tuesday.
Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., who has led the Democrats’ war effort for the past few months, asserted that while the deal may be a good thing, it appears that the US and Iran will be headed for a “relaxation” from fighting as both sides hammer out the final details of a lengthy peace deal.

“The recess is a good time to do what we should have done before this war, which is to consult with Congress as required by the Constitution,” Kaine said. “Why did we restart the war if we haven’t done our job yet?”
However, Warnock’s resolution failed despite a previous attempt to advance it in the Senate last month when the Senate Republicans joined almost all Senate Democrats in condemning the war. That group, Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, Bill Cassidy, R-La., Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, and Rand Paul, R-Ky., joined all Democrats in voting for the resolution.
But the absence on both sides of the aisle has helped the GOP in its effort to give Trump a runway to strike a deal to end the war.

Senate Foreign Relations Chairman James Risch, R-Idaho, said that Democrats were successfully trying to “help Iran” with the Democrats’ war effort, and said that if the resolution passes, Iran will withdraw from any future peace agreement.
“If a miracle happens, a miracle happens, and this passed, passed the Senate, passed the House, and the president signed it – if that miracle happens, do you think Iran will sign the deal that was negotiated? Of course not,” said Risch.

Meanwhile, Congress is still awaiting details of the deal, which as of Tuesday, has yet to happen publicly or behind closed doors in the upper chamber.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune, RS.D., said he had not been briefed on the matter. When asked if it is normal for Thune and others to request this kind of speech from the management, Thune said, “Since I have been in this job, we have not had this issue, so I do not know the answer to that.”
“My opinion is that it’s a job that, at some point, they understand that they’re going to have to do it, I think they’ve expressed a lot, that they have to get this in front of us,” he said. “And I hope that happens sooner rather than later. But you know, it obviously sounds like they’re not going to be public about it until the end of the week, so we’ll see.”
Some Democrats, on the other hand, argue that early reports of the deal seem to favor Iran more than the US.

Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., said, “It’s actually a commitment.”
“But I think that’s the only play we can do right now. We have to end this war, stop wasting money, stop killing Americans and civilians, stop driving disaster,” said Murphy. “So, it’s bad, but he won’t get a better deal. So, we have to accept the humiliation.”
