If you’re a fan of animated shows for adults, you’ve probably spent your fair share of hours talking about FX’s. The archer. The series, which first aired in 2009, centers on a group of sarcastic spies, who take a trip through drunken benders, one-night stands, and jokes faster than your brain can process in one viewing. Once upon a time, I would think The archer being one of the best shows on television. Unfortunately, after airing for 14 seasons, the show lost a lot of its magic, and was finally interrupted with a surprise ending.
Many fans have different ideas about when The archer it rose. Some say the show fell apart in season five, after it moved from a straight-forward spy show to an ill-defined crime thriller. Some stopped watching in season eight, when the title character was shot and sent into a multi-season coma. Personally, I find it hard to pinpoint when the show started going downhill, even though most of the blame is on real-world events outside of the narrative.
Archer’s Isis problem
The first four seasons of The archer it kept a thin veneer of continuity, with a few running gags to reward binge-watching and eagle-eyed fans. However, for the most part, the series was episodic in nature, allowing you to throw any episode on the TV while channel surfing arbitrarily. As soon as the series began to reach mainstream success, the writers had to make a drastic pivot. This is because the spy agency in the show is called Isis, which you can see as a real terrorist outfit around the world. ISIS was not making headlines in 2009, but as The archer continued, the group became one of the most talked about rebels, making for some strange discussions in retrospect.
In the fifth season, The archer drop the pretense of an Isis spy agency, and the main characters take up jobs as CIA soldiers. In doing so, the show takes a strong pivot to serialization, meaning you’ll actually have to watch all the episodes in order to know what’s going on. The jokes still work, the characters are still as weird as ever, but some of the magic of Archer’s Writing too fast gets lost in the shuffle. Fast forward to the end of the The archer season seven, when Sterling Archer is shot and left for dead, and has some scary coma episodes to look forward to.
Describing the Seasons
I can’t really prove this, but I’m given the impression that series creator and showrunner Adam Reed wanted to leave the show and work on other stories in season seven. The archer. But, since the series had become a cash cow for the network, FX insisted on reviving it, even if it meant bringing in less cohesive material. The coma periods are unwatchable- they might be considered good compared to the little show- but they clearly aren’t The archer that fans know and love. Each of Coma’s three seasons completely recasts the core cast, as they take on new roles as Neo-noir detectives, island refugees, and even space soldiers.
My opinion about Adam Reed seems to be true when you consider that he finally left the show after a sloppy tenth season. In doing so, Reed empowered the new administration to awaken Sterling Archer from his coma, and attempt to return to the status quo. Even though I’m not a fan of Christian eras, this is where the show totally came out for me. With the loss of Reed’s acerbic wit and the realization that three seasons of material effectively disappeared into thin air, season 11 feels like a cheap imitation of the original. The archer.
The death of Jessica Walter
Even if you are The archer big fan, you will have to admit that the death blow of the series happened in 2021, when Jessica Walter died. Walter voiced Sterling Malory’s mother, and gave a standout performance that left the show empty in her absence. The writers were able to use saved voice lines to give her character a good chance at the season 12 finale, even though FX made the baffling decision to fund the series’ corpse two more seasons later.
Seasons 13 and 14 of The archer had some happy moments, and a few solid laughs, but the show would never find its spark once the matriarch of the Archer family was out of the picture. FX unceremoniously canceled the series in 2023, and delivered a special three-part finale to delight longtime viewers.
What It Could Be
The writers did their best to tie up all the loose ends, and I was still happy to get to the end of the show. Still, when the credits rolled, I couldn’t help but wonder what the state of television would have looked like if Adam Reed had just taken his talents to a new show, rather than changing much of what was done. The archer big.
All 14 seasons of The archer currently streaming on Hulu. If you’ve never seen the show, it’s still worth watching, as long as you manage your expectations when you go in.
