Which Coin Offers the Strongest Risk-Reward Right Now?
Determining which coin offers the best opportunity requires examining how each asset performed in May. Ethereum has a very consistent track record of positive returns over this period. ETH has posted gains in May six of the past nine years, with outstanding performances in 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2025.
During these years, the price of Ethereum has gained 60%, 161%, 63%, and 41%, driven by different catalysts in each cycle – the momentum of the market bulls, the ICO mania in 2017, the development of the network, and the entry of ETF in 2025. When ETH ended in May with a loss, like 20% of 20% and 20% of 20, like 20% of 20, and 201% of 201%. it was usually because buyers pulled back and the market cooled after a strong run.
Solana’s performance in May is less predictable. The coin’s strongest performance—a 30.5% gain in 2024 and 6% growth in 2025—came when DEX volume, developer activity, and meme coin cycles were strong. When those metrics weakened, Solana underperformed, as seen in 2022 and 2023 when it dropped 46% and 8% respectively. SOL does not initiate rallies in May, historically, as its performance tends to follow pre-existing momentum.
XRP’s May performance shows just how strong the market can be. Of all three coins, XRP recorded one of the highest gains in May—378% in 2017 and 40% in 2019. But the coin also recorded sharp declines, such as a 34% decline in 2021 and a 28% decline in 2022.
XRP price performance is tied to certain events. The rally to $3.65 from its cycle high in July 2025 was a 76% gain since January, driven by a combination of positive factors including Trump’s pro-crypto stance, the SEC settlement nearing completion, and expectations for ETF approval. Despite those triggers, XRP is struggling against bearish forces.
While historical trends favor Ethereum with consistent returns in May, market conditions in 2026 are different from previous cycles, leaving room for any of the three coins to deliver gains.
What to Consider Before Choosing Between XRP, Solana, and Ethereum
Before deciding which of these three coins has the best setup, these are some important things to look for.
XRP
Regulatory clarity has been a hotly debated topic among XRP holders. The SEC and CFTC identified XRP as a digital asset in March, but without legislation to block that status—like the CLARITY Act—other regulators could reverse the status.
The CLARITY Act is widely expected to drive XRP’s next rally. Senators Lummis and Thom Tillis are urging Senate Banking Committee Chairman Tim Scott to set a markup date for the bill. If this happens in the second week of May, XRP could return to $2, setting the stage for a move back to the cycle high of $3.65.
Blame each other
April was Solana’s first green month of 2026, with a low yield of 1.30%. The Solana Foundation has been pushing for ecosystem development through partnerships—such as the Shinhan Card agreement that opens up stablecoin transactions to more than 28 million cardholders on Solana. Solana’s real-world asset ecosystem also reached an all-time high of $2.5 billion in total on-chain value.
With more partnerships and ecosystem development, investor confidence could improve and push Solana’s price above $100—a 20% gain from its current price.
Ethereum
May was the strongest month for Ethereum in history, delivering an average return of 27%. To gauge whether 2026 will follow the pattern, look beyond past performance and focus on ETF inflows and how the market is pricing Glamsterdam’s development.
SoSoValue data shows that Spot Ethereum ETFs recorded an average of $356 million in April, with early May already adding $101 million. That level of penetration shows that institutional players are taking top positions, giving Ethereum a solid footing.
Ethereum has a reputation for price in early development, and the coin is expected. The Glamsterdam development, which could improve L1 stability and distribution, is expected before the end of H1 2026. Expectations about the development could increase the momentum of ETH and make the price reach $3,000—a 30% rise from current levels.
Which Altcoin Is The Best Right Now?
Ethereum has a very balanced setup because its good performance in May was not dependent on any single event. XRP’s prospects could improve quickly if the CLARITY Act passes—the coin is always active after one major event, and the bill is the kind of catalyst it needs to deliver big gains.
Solana’s chances of moving up in May are uncertain. The development and partnership of the Solana Foundation has not yet initiated any of the price owners would expect. With the passage of the CLARITY Act and a favorable political environment, the market situation can improve and pull Solana higher with it.
That said, if these events don’t happen in May, Ethereum is still the safest bet of the three cryptos based on its history.
