The creator broke his silence regarding the criticism related to the age difference of the actors.
“I had a conversation with Ella before we closed her deal to make sure she knew what was coming,” he told Variety in May 2026. “She was reading the book, so she had already heard, but I used her for everything and made sure she was comfortable and confident.”
Levy admitted that Bright and Cameli have a gap of almost nine years.
“If I felt like she wasn’t ready, I would have pumped the brakes immediately. “And we have an amazing intimacy coordinator, Kathy Kadler, who not only interviewed Belmont and Ella but all the actors who had intimacy work.”
Levy added: “[It was about] really understanding what made everyone comfortable, what they felt good about, what they didn’t. We never do anything that makes anyone uncomfortable before we wrap the camera frame.”

“For Hannah, the meeting was half naked, and for Allie [Hayes]it had to be full [nudity]. That’s because Allie has an incredible confidence in herself and is very comfortable with her body and sex is such an important part of her life,” Bright explained on the “Not Skinny But Not Fat” podcast in June 2026, referring to the scenes Mika Abdalla had to shoot while playing Allie.
He continued: “For Hannah – obviously, she’s given her history [with sexual assault] – he dresses casually in skinny pants and hoodies. It just shows the difference between the characters. That was always – from the beginning – the idea. “
Bright clarified that nothing has changed since he was released, adding, “Everything [the people auditioning for] Hannah knew that there would be discrimination. For Allie, everyone would be full of it [a] a complete understanding of what we were getting into.”
