US, Canada agree on terms to open Gordie-Howe International Bridge

The United States and Canada have reached an agreement to open a new multibillion-dollar bridge connecting Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, ending a dispute that has delayed the project’s launch.
The Gordie-Howe International Bridge will now open on July 27 and become the fourth crossing between Detroit and Canada.
The 1.5 km long bridge was supposed to be opened last month. The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority said on June 11 that the US and Canada agreed to postpone the opening to “resolve any outstanding issues.”
President Donald Trump – who earlier this year threatened to block the opening of the bridge unless the US owns a share of it – announced on Truth Social early Saturday morning that “he managed to cut the BEST DEAL for America.”

The original deal for the “new and wonderful” bridge was “unacceptable to me,” Trump wrote in his post.
“The new deal is great, and right. Thank you and congratulations to the Government of Canada. May we both have many years of success with this wonderful new development!!!” he concluded.
On Friday, the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority said the US and Canada have agreed to a “series of cooperative measures” regarding how tolls will be charged to drivers.
Both sides have agreed that part of the profits the bridge makes will go to a regional development fund, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing a Canadian official.

The original agreement stipulated that all proceeds would go to Canada until it received the nearly CAD 6.4 billion it had cost to build the bridge. Construction began in 2018 and Canada agreed to foot the entire bill.
A Canadian official also told The Journal that bridge managers would need US approval before raising tolls by 10% or more. Approval would also be required if the authority were to reduce tolls at comparable crossings, such as the Ambassador Bridge, the official said.
Fox News Digital has reached out to the White House, the Office of the Prime Minister of Canada and the bridge’s management for comment on the terms of the new agreement.

In a statement on Friday, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer celebrated the opening of the bridge, which will be managed by her state and Canada. He did not mention Trump or the administration in his remarks.
“Thousands of Michigan workers are building this critical bridge, which will speed up auto production, lower costs, reduce traffic, strengthen agriculture, and give people on both sides of the border better-paying jobs and a brighter future,” Whitmer said.

He continued: “I am proud to fight for its opening and I congratulate my colleagues who have worked with me on this issue for many years.”
The Gordie Howe Bridge was named after the Canadian hockey star who won four Stanley Cup championships with the Detroit Red Wings in the 1950s.
