This Crime Thriller Has Ruled Netflix For Weeks, And Season 2 Is Finally Coming

Guy Ritchie’s Netflix series Gentlemen everything his 2019 film of the same name was missing. It’s better in every way, and it does better, too. And season 2 is now on its way.

When it was released in 2024, it stayed in the top ten Netflix charts for weeks. Although it debuted at number three in the US, Gentlemen hit number one in several countries, including Australia and the United Kingdom.

Why Gentlemen Is Better Than The Movie That Inspired It

Gentlemenstars Theo James as Edward “Eddie” Horniman (Freddy’s younger, calm, and reliable brother), Kaya Scodelario as Susie Glass (head of the crime family), Daniel Ings as Freddy Horniman (Eddie’s older, drug-addicted brother), and Joely Richardson as Lady Sabrina Horniman who keeps Freddy’s mother apart from Eddie and Eddie.

Although it can be considered as a spin-off or a soft remake of the 2019 movie, Gentlemen it’s a different story with some similarities to the movie. The show’s plot centers around Theo James’ character, Eddie, and his older brother, Freddy.

When his father dies, Freddy expects the inheritance to be left to him (he is the firstborn son), but things don’t go as he expects. Eddie is named the new Governor of the estate instead, and the new manager soon discovers that there is more to his estate than money and Halstead Manor.

GentlemenThe struggle and back and forth between the opposing siblings is a recurring theme in Ritchie’s films/shows. The brothers’ inability to hold a conversation without some level of profanity and violence is interesting.

The first episode of the series consists of a light-hearted, raw scene where everyone says “cock” as often as possible (reminiscent of the “meow” gag in Super Troopers), but once the genitalia jokes are over, the show takes on a more rhythmic tone.

However, part of the joy of engaging with Guy Ritchie’s work is watching his characters’ endless journeys of poking, purging, and criticizing each other. In GentlemenEddie and Susie’s relationship is another point of audience engagement and interest.

Susie is the daughter of a powerful crime family, who plant marijuana in the country’s elite and give them a shortcut to keep their estates intact. When Eddie’s father was still alive, he made a deal with Susie’s family (the Glass family) that allowed them to use the Halstead property for surgery.

Now, Eddie wants out of the business. Gentlemen makes good use of the drive of two lead characters being pushed in different directions, all the while highlighting the tight and undeniable chemistry between the pair.

The dynamic between Freddy and Eddie also makes the show work well. Freddy may be the most annoying character Guy Ritchie has ever brought to the screen, but Eddie’s good demeanor offsets his anxious nature.

To add excitement, all episodes of Gentlemen includes well-placed dialogue about what a “gentleman” does. If you want to get in on the buzz, you can watch the entire first season streaming on Netflix.

The Gentlemen Season 2: What We Know So Far
