Professor of St. Bonaventure University is facing backlash on social media after it appeared to celebrate the death of South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham on a social media post before deleting it less than 12 hours later, prompting renewed scrutiny of political speech on college campuses.

A social media account identified as Ibrahim Zabad, a political science professor at a private university in western New York, posted a message Saturday night celebrating Graham’s death, using somber language and ending with the words “Rest in Hell,” according to Campus Reform.

The next morning, at 5:09 a.m. according to Campus Reform, the same account had deleted the post and published an apology admitting that the message was inappropriate, disrespectful and insensitive.

A screenshot of Saturday X’s 11:56 pm post reads, “He was a staunch anti-Palestinian, anti-Arab, anti-Islamic bloodline. He equated war with evil. He supported all the brutal wars Israel started against the Palestinians and the Lebanese and the Syrians and the Iranians and the Iraqis and the Yemenis.”

The article added, “He truly condoned Israel’s war of genocide and unashamedly supported the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians in their homeland. He wholeheartedly and passionately supported the Greater Israel project and all the murder, expropriation, dispossession and barbarism that it entails.”

An account with Zabad’s name and photo, which no longer appears to be active, posted an apology that read in part, “I want to sincerely apologize for the post about the passing of Senator Lindsey Graham. My words were inappropriate and disrespectful and failed to show compassion in a time of loss and grief. I apologize for the post and the words I used.”

Graham did not align well with our university’s mission and values and we will be speaking with him about the situation to ensure that Franciscan values are upheld and remain at St. Bonaventure.”
