A man accused of carrying out a series of shootings that appeared to have happened in the Atlanta area, including the slaying of a Department of Homeland Security employee who was walking his dog, died in jail before authorities could find a motive.
Olalukitan Adon Abel, 26, was found unresponsive in his cell at approximately 6:48 pm at the DeKalb County Jail. Officials tried life-saving measures, but he was pronounced dead a half hour later, the sheriff’s office said.
“There is no indication of criminal activity or foul play,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement, adding that the medical examiner’s office will determine the official cause of death. The sheriff’s office said it is conducting an internal review of the death, in accordance with agency policy.
Adon Abel was charged in connection with last week’s shootings, which killed Prianna Weathers, 31, and Lauren Bullis, 40, a DHS auditor. Prosecutors were also pursuing another murder case after the death of Tony Mathews, 49, who was injured in the incident.

Investigators have yet to find a motive and say it is unclear whether the suspect knew the victims. Police believe at least one of the attacks may have happened randomly.
His roommates told the Associated Press that just before the shooting incident, Adon Abel got into an argument, venting the air in the house they were living in and then ran out.

The terror timeline began around 12:50 a.m. on April 13, when DeKalb County Police discovered that Weathers had been shot multiple times in the Decatur area.

The violence then spread to Brookhaven, where Mathews was attacked and shot multiple times outside a business center.
The ordeal came to a shocking end around 6:50 a.m. in Panthersville, a community south of Decatur, where Bullis was found shot and stabbed. Police said witnesses reported seeing a man standing over her before he fled the scene.

DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin confirmed Wednesday that Bullis was “brutally shot and stabbed to death,” identifying the suspect as Adon Abel, who was born in 2022 and had a record that included convictions for sexual assault, assault and battery on a police officer.
