Testaments will deal with the trauma of the screen in a very different way than before The Handmaid’s Tale.
Creator Bruce Miller opened with Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) past is explored in the spinoff, to discuss The Hollywood Reporter On Wednesday, April 8, “We missed him so much that we only show a few of his past, and what we have to show in that.”
Miller emphasized that they “thought a lot about the level of trauma” they wanted to “put the audience through.”
So when we looked at the information in The Testaments, we wanted to be sure [the flashbacks] it matched our goal of understanding how Lydia was thinking at the beginning of Gilead school and why she made the decisions she did,” he continued.
Based on Margaret Atwoodthe novel of the same name, on Hulu The Handmaid’s Tale takes place in a dystopian future where low fertility rates lead women to be assigned to men in order to have children. The series aired from 2017 to 2025.
Testamentsairing Wednesday, is set four years later. Dowd’s Aunt Lydia serves as narrator as viewers are transported back to the dystopian future. Agnes and Daisy pose as the “Pearl Girls” to sneak into Canada in an attempt to smuggle incriminating information about the Gilead empire, while Aunt Lydia works as an undercover source in Gilead.
In addition to Chase Infiniti, Lucy Halliday and Dowd, Testaments stars Eva Foote, Rowan Blanchard, Kira Guloien, Amy Seimetz again Brad Alexander. Birva Pandya, Zarrin Darnell-Martin, Mattea Conforti, Shechinah Mpumlwana, Mabel Li again Isolde Ardies make other characters.
“Because this program [told] from the point of view of a lot of young people, I really hope that some people are surprised, maybe in the same way that the maids weren’t,” Halliday told THR. [age as the] the people who will be the ones who have to grow up and face the consequences that the current society puts on them. So, in a way, I hope that seeing the new generation will give people a different perspective and make them think more about the world they are creating outside.”
Infiniti also delved into important topics at the heart of the series.
“Above all, I want this program to be seen as a warning, because there are things that happen in this game and things that happen in life not far away,” he said. “With my hopes and dreams, I can really hope that this will wake people up to how scary it is [those changes] can be. There is strength in values and strength in unity, and I would like people to take that from this game and use it in real life, because what is often lacking in the world is unity.”
Testaments airs Wednesdays on Hulu.
