Southwest Airlines has reignited one of the biggest debates about air travel etiquette after it joked on social media that passengers who stood up too soon after landing “wouldn’t get off the plane too soon.”
“You cannot 👏 get off 👏 a plane 👏 👏 faster 👏 by standing 👏 up 👏 .001 👏 seconds 👏 after 👏 seat belt 👏 👏 sign 👏 closes 👏 👏,” the airline recently wrote in Threads, using emojis as shown.
The post quickly revived a common debate among travelers.

Some say they view the practice as inconsiderate – while others say that standing helps them stretch, retrieve their boarding bags and prepare for the retreat.
The comments section quickly filled up as travelers expressed why they stopped as soon as the seat belt sign went off. Many have insisted that it’s less about getting off the plane quickly and more about being comfortable and ready to leave the plane as quickly as possible.

Diane Gottsman, an ethics expert based in Texas, previously told Fox News Digital that passengers who stop immediately after landing have become a source of frustration for many other travelers.
“On long flights, people are eager to stand up and stretch their legs,” Gottsman said.

He said problems arise when passengers enter the aisle early, block others or enter limited personal space inside the cabin.

“Walking into the hallway and trying to push is a very straightforward practice,” Gottsman said.
“For safety reasons, it’s better to stay seated unless there’s a good place to walk.”

Ethical experts say that many passengers stop early to collect their bags and get ready to exit, but they also warn that these actions are rude when they block the way of walking, push others or choke other travelers. (Stock)
Flight attendants should manage the situation to help keep the briefing process organized, Gottsman added.

Many commentators say that stopping after arrival is not a problem. They said passengers should wait their turn and avoid pushing ahead of others.

“I don’t push in front of people, I try not to get in the way of others. I wait for the rows in front of me to get off. People who take the time to collect their things catch others and the plane,” continued the analyst.
