Ro Khanna asks why Iran is getting more economic development than American cities

Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., supported President Donald Trump’s new deal announced with Iran that aims to formally end the conflict between the US and Tehran, while also raising questions about the economic commitments that accompany the deal and whether the same attention is being paid to struggling American communities.

Khanna joined FOX Business’ Maria Bartiromo on “Mornings with Maria” to discuss the deal, which includes commitments related to Iran’s future economic development and reconstruction and has drawn criticism and praise from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.

Khanna said he supports ending the conflict through negotiations, but said the agreement comes with trade-offs that should be carefully considered. He outlined provisions that he said would require raising as much as $300 billion for Iran’s economic development and reconstruction, although he noted that the funds would not come from American taxpayers.

“We’re going to be trying to raise $300 billion for Iran’s economic development and reconstruction, not US taxpayer money, but increasing that money. Why don’t we focus on economic development and reconstruction in Middleton, Ohio? Johnstown, Pennsylvania,” Khanna said.

The comments reflect a broader debate in Washington about how the US balances foreign policy priorities with domestic economic problems. Communities in parts of the Industrial Midwest have spent decades dealing with factory closings, job losses and population declines, making investment in manufacturing and economic development an ongoing political issue.

Khanna said that while Trump has encouraged efforts to revive American industry, more needs to be done to support manufacturing regions.

“What about the heart and the construction of industrial areas? That has not happened yet,” said Khanna.

Despite his concerns, Khanna urged other Democrats to support the deal, saying he believes a negotiation and settlement is better than a protracted dispute.

“The American people are tired of these wars. They don’t want wars in the Middle East. They don’t want to be dragged,” said Khanna. “They want diplomacy. Diplomacy is actually better than these wars.”
