When the Pittsburgh Penguins were eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs this season after a Game 6 overtime loss to the Philadelphia Flyers, there was much speculation that it would be the last game for the team’s long-time core of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang.

However, while it remains to be seen how the summer pans out, Crosby has made it clear that he has no plans to retire from the NHL.

Crosby is currently in Switzerland playing for Team Canada in the IIHF World Championship and was interviewed by The Athletic. about the prospect of playing another five years.

While making it five more years at the NHL level — even one of the best he’ll ever do — when he turns 39 in August is a no-brainer, the Penguins captain shut down speculation that next season will be his.

“Absolutely not,” Crosby said. “I said every year because of where the team is, it makes sense, even if it’s our cap, we have people coming in and out, to have that flexibility. It’s important.”

And it wasn’t like Crosby was about to ride, either. He tallied 74 points (29G, 25A) in the regular season and did it in 68 games played, good enough for Crosby’s 21st season in a point-per-game pace.

Of course, next season, Crosby will enter the final year of his current contract, and he emphasized that he will evaluate where the team is before working on a new deal with GM Kyle Dubas.

“Yes, I mean every year according to the contracts,” he explained. “It seems reasonable. I mean, it could change. We’ll see. Kyle (Dubas) and I haven’t talked about it. But I’ll talk to Pat (Brisson, his agent) and Kyle later this summer. We’ll talk about it and make sense. If it makes sense to sign for a few years, we’ll do that.”

So, especially considering where the team has been this year, it seems like Flyers fans like myself will have to suffer through Crosby making our lives hell for at least a few more years.
