OpenAI introduces ChatGPT Work to automate tasks and files in the workplace

On Thursday, OpenAI launched a new enterprise application called ChatGPT Work, designed to help the popular chatbot to automate and perform local tasks across various applications and files.

ChatGPT’s functionality is powered by OpenAI’s most advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) model, GPT-5.6, and is able to gather context from applications, files and workflows to create finished documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports and websites, the company said in its announcement.

The company explained that ChatGPT Work can use plugins to communicate with applications such as Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Drive and Sharepoint, as well as email programs, calendars, CRM platforms, project trackers and other tools.

Once connected, ChatGPT can gather context about work, pull information, create documents, decks and perform analysis while refining drafts behind the user’s work.

In the OpenAI announcement, the company said that ChatGPT Work can continue to work on projects when the user is not on the phone or at his computer by using Scheduled Tasks, which can take new messages and turn them into updated documents or slides and circulate changes between team members, for example.

ChatGPT Work will be available from Thursday in the Pro, Enterprise, and Edu plans – and will be launched in the Plus and Business plans in the coming days. It is also available in the ChatGPT desktop app in every version, including the free version.

This announcement comes as OpenAI’s latest foray into agent AI tools following the launch of Operator and extensive research, which was later integrated into ChatGPT Agent for individual users, and Workspace Agents for automating business workflows.

OpenAI is in the midst of fierce competition with AI rivals such as Anthropic, which released Claude Cowork – an agent tool that can program and execute multi-step tasks autonomously.

Anthropic added plugins to Claude Cowork that allowed it to automate tasks related to legal analysis, sales, marketing and data analysis, resulting in sales of US and European software and technology services shares earlier this year amid concerns about its potential to disrupt the data analysis industry.

Microsoft, which supports OpenAI, also unveiled Copilot Cowork to expand its agent AI offerings after the release of Anthropic.
