New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani stepped into East Harlem’s public pool in a business suit to kick off the summer Saturday, but the show was quickly overshadowed by a heated argument with New York Republicans.
Video captured the mayor jumping into Thomas Jefferson Pool fully clothed and swimming with children to celebrate 90 years of the city’s Works Progress Administration outdoor pools.
The event was intended to highlight the expanded free swimming programs and the historic legacy of the Olympic-sized facilities.
However, the celebration quickly took a political turn as Mamdani addressed New York GOP gubernatorial candidate and Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, demanding an apology for recent comments Blakeman made about Brad Lander who is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America.

After Dan Goldman won the NY-10 congressional seat, Blakeman said in an interview with Newsmax that Lander “would be a concentration camp guard if he could.”
Mamdani defended Lander, calling him a “proud Jewish New Yorker” and describing Blakeman’s comments as “unacceptable and incomprehensible.”

Mamdani added that he thought the comparison of Lander to a “Nazi prison guard” was “disgusting”, and said it showed that the Republican Party is working to “dehumanize anyone they disagree with.”
Blakeman fired back at the mayor’s demands Saturday afternoon, saying the mayor has no credibility.

“This is coming from the guy who didn’t march in the Israel Day Parade, called AIPAC members ‘monsters,’ and canceled the Puerto Rican Day Breakfast,” Blakeman told Fox News Digital. “Zohran Mamdani is dishonest. He is bigoted, and anti-American.”
