Socialist Colorado congressman Melat Kiros blamed Israel’s activities in the Middle East for encouraging attacks on Jews in other countries during an interview on Wednesday.

Kiros is part of a wave of anti-Israel, far-right candidates gaining popularity in the Democratic Party. She won her primary in her home state of Denver this week, ousting longtime incumbent Diana Degette after far-right candidates won their New York primaries last month.

Colorado Attorney General and former Democratic gubernatorial candidate Phil Weiser recently criticized his reluctance to answer whether a deadly attack on a pro-Israel rally in Boulder last year could be described as anti-Semitic, something the 9News host brought up on Kiros earlier this week.

“I just spoke with Attorney General Phil Weiser, who won the Democratic primary for governor last night. He is very likely to be the next governor of Colorado in the same way that he is likely to be a member of the Colorado congressional delegation coming next year,” said the host.

“He has real concerns about the things you said about Israel and, in particular, about the bombing of Jewish people in Boulder, and he told me he’d like to sit down and have a conversation with you to hear where you’re coming from and hear where you’re coming from. Are you open to that?”

“Sure,” he said hoping to talk to Weiser. “You know, at the end of the day, what happened in Boulder was a horrific attack on a group of Jewish people who were peacefully protesting, and we see that Israel’s actions are putting the Jewish people in grave danger. And the hatred and antisemitism that is rising because of that is what I have every intention of prioritizing and fighting.

“I look forward to sitting down with Phil Weiser to find out how we can work together to fight that hatred.”

In the aforementioned interview, Kiros said of the convicted bomber, “I don’t know what was in the heart of this criminal. All I know is that he went and attacked innocent people because of what they might have believed, and I don’t know what the people at that protest believed, either. In fact, most of them were probably just there, you know, to have their families kidnapped on the 7th. It’s not a political statement in itself.”

Mohamed Soliman’s attack took place on June 1, 2025, targeting a pro-Israel protest in Boulder. It is eighty-two years old Karen Diamond was killed, and about a dozen others were injured.

Soliman appeared pretend to be a farmer before launching into action, he threw two flaming projectiles at the protesters, according to prosecutors.

He pleaded guilty in May to charges including murder, and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Soliman expressed remorse for his crime and even said he deserved the death penalty, the New York Times reported. He denied that he was motivated by hatred of Jews but began what the Times called “opposition to Zionism, which he described as ‘the enemy.'”

He could still face the death penalty on federal hate crime charges.
