IR-rated 90s Heist Flick From A Great Director An Unlawfully Overlooked Comedy Of Errors

Written by Robert Scucci | Published

If there’s one thing I love more than a reluctant hero who’s a master of his craft, it’s the exact opposite: a bunch of collaborators who are hell-bent on attracting the worst at what they do. Both character archetypes scratch the same itch because situational comedy writes itself too much. Killing a Mary Sue (2025) is great because its hero is actually a sleeper agent, but all he wants to do is play video games, party, and pass out. In 1996 Bottle Rocketon the other hand, it’s comprised of some of the dumbest criminals you’ve ever seen, and they sincerely believe that their 75-year plan of short-term, poorly planned heists will last them until they retire.

Starting Wes Anderson’s career two years ago Rushmore began to make its rounds, Bottle Rocket it’s a hard-hitting comedy where its characters have to constantly adjust their plans. It’s very rewarding to have Owen and Luke Wilson play best friends because their familiarity as brothers makes for a natural chemistry, which seems easy as they keep shooting themselves in the foot for the love of the game.

From Loony Bin to Planning Heists

It doesn’t take long Bottle Rocket establishing existing protagonists. Dignan (Owen Wilson) comes from the mental institution where his best friend Anthony (Luke Wilson) lives. Anthony doesn’t commit, but is there willingly because of his ongoing “fatigue”. Against medical advice, Dignan releases Anthony from his cell and quickly makes his intentions clear.

The two, with the help of Dignan’s friend Bob Mapplethorpe (Robert Musgrave), plan a robbery at Anthony’s house, stealing a predetermined list of items and testing their effectiveness when it comes to breaking and entering. Even this performance, while not sloppy enough to get the law involved, goes awry because Dignan already comes out on top, revealing just how weak their dream team is.

Heck, the only reason Bob got involved in the first place isn’t even a matter of trust. He happens to be the only person they know with a working car.

Dignan’s main goal in Bottle Rocket He will also contact his former partner, Mr. Henry (James Caan), who he hopes will help him build his criminal enterprise. Along the way, after robbing a bookstore of all places and sleeping on the floor of a motel, Dignan and Anthony are confused when Bob, who I must remind you is the only person with a car, bails out to help his brother after the authorities find their marijuana crop; something they should probably tell them about before they associate themselves with him.

During their short stay, Anthony falls in love with a motel maid named Inez, who no longer speaks English. Before leaving the motel and stealing a car that quickly breaks down, Anthony gives Inez all the money from their previous robberies as a parting gift, which naturally causes tension between him and Dignan.

It goes like this…

The Ultimate Joke of Errors

Bottle Rocket 1996

One way or another, Bottle Rocket you remind me of 2013 The Blue Ruin for one specific reason. In that movie, a man wants revenge for the death of his parents, but he’s just a normal guy, not some kind of John Wick. He is not dumb, and the film is not a joke; he never lives a life of caution and never stops to think about all the possible consequences before kicking off his violent odyssey. “What could go wrong if you cut a tire but the car attached to it becomes your only getaway car?” or “I just hit the window and now my hand is really messed up,” are exactly the kinds of problems Macon Blair’s Dwight Evans gets into. The Blue Ruin.

Bottle Rocket it works on that same inner logic, except it’s played for laughs. These guys are so blind that it’s sad, but they also walk like this, talking about the Dunning-Kruger figure that makes for a naturally good joke. It all culminates in a cold storage heist that goes about as well as you’d expect, but you’ll still be surprised at how badly they screw everything up in every way imaginable.

Bottle Rocket 1996

It’s almost poetic how bad criminals are Bottle Rocket they’re a crime, and a must-see, especially if you’re a fan of Anderson’s work but haven’t frequented his earlier films.
