Billy Ray Cyrus Says He ‘Almost Died’ After Battle With Sepsis

Billy Ray Cyrus reveals his near fatal health scare.
“I got so sick I almost died,” Cyrus, 64, said People in a cover story published on Wednesday, June 10. “As I was trying to stay alive, sometimes they would bring me home from the hospital, and I would be there [my dog] Tommy Jack. My body was exploding and there was toxicity from anything else. If it had exploded, I would have died.”
He continued, “At the last minute I was answered by a prayer, there is a rock of prayer, and I found my knee.” [because] I began to enter that stone every morning, every day, every sunset, every night. I [would] put my knee in there. I said, ‘God, please. I need a miracle. I need a miracle.’”
Soon Cyrus was about to undergo “the last operation.”
“I got to the hospital, they said, ‘Mr. Koresi, he’s gone, he’s recovered,'” he recalled. “[I] he had a miracle. Love, hope, music, joy, things I would really forget, maybe, how they feel, and say, ‘Oh!’ Even dreaming again.”
Cyrus dreamed of making music again after a voice diagnosis in 2024 that left him physically unable to sing.
“I have been attacked by a disease and my voice is not there, I cannot speak,” he said. “I begin to believe, when I performed the first miracle, I said, “Cyrus, you cannot speak or sing now, but believe that you can.’ “
Cyrus soon began “leaning in” playing Noah’s daughter’s newly released song “Don’t Give Me Everything,” which his son Braison had written.
“I just love it so much,” she said. “I thank that song for saving me. It’s a part of it, for sure.”
Billy Ray shares Braison, 32, and Noah, 26, with ex-wife Tish Cyrusand children Brandi, 39, Trace, 37, and Miley, 33. (The “Achy Breaky Heart” singer is also father to son Christopher, 34, with whom he shares ex. Kristin Luckey.)
Billy Ray and Tish’s 2022 divorce ended the rift between the Cyrus family.
“Sometimes change is scary, and I’ll keep doing the wrong thing for a long time because I’m afraid of change,” said Billy Ray. People about his divorce. “When I finally get the courage to make a commitment in my mind and say, ‘I’m going to do this,’ it happens. There’s no looking back. I think that’s probably good for everyone sometimes — just letting it go.”
However, the Cyruses have mended the fence.
Billy Ray said: “Life is a series of transitions, and I think my family has always known that. “Whatever has happened is in the rear view mirror. The past is past and it has happened. The future is what we have, and we must look forward.”
