Airbnb is using anti-party technology ahead of the July 4th holiday weekend

Airbnb is launching its anti-party technology ahead of the July 4 weekend to address the risk of disruptive parties in communities across the country on one of the busiest weekends of the year.

The company said its anti-party technology looks for a number of factors that can help identify attempted bookings of all listings that pose a high risk of an unauthorized party and redirect those guests to other accommodations.

Guests redirected to whole home bookings can book private room and hotel listings on the Airbnb site.

“This is the fifth year in a row we’ve implemented these safeguards on July 4th, and last year they redirected more than 20,000 people to high-risk areas over the holiday weekend,” said Rog Kaiser, Airbnb’s vice president of fraud and security operations.

“That kind of energy — developed year after year — is what’s needed to help make the holidays great for our hosts, guests and the communities around them,” Kaiser added.

Airbnb said that by 2025, its anti-gang technology helped block or redirect more than 20,000 people from booking listings across the US over the July 4th weekend, noting that it has made advances in technology.

That number includes about 3,100 people in Florida, another 3,100 people in Texas and about 2,500 people in California.

The company explained that these anti-gang measures are part of a wider set of tools it uses to promote responsible travel and work in partnership with its global booking screening technology, which uses machine learning to reduce high-risk bookings throughout the year.

Additionally, Airbnb’s announcement warned parents, grandparents and other adults about the platform’s policies that prevent them from booking accommodations for children.

Company rules specifically prohibit children under the age of 18 from having Airbnb accounts, and adult account holders are prohibited from booking accommodation for a minor unless an adult will be present for the entire trip.

Violations of those policies may result in the loss of an Airbnb account – including cancellation of future trips booked – and violators may face financial liability for any property damage that occurs during the stay.

Account holders may also face legal action if law enforcement becomes involved following a disruptive party.

“These efforts demonstrate our continued commitment to helping reduce the risk of disruptive groups, and we are seeing positive results,” the company said in its announcement. “By 2025, less than 0.06% of Airbnb stays in the US resulted in a party reporting to us.”

Airbnb’s announcement also noted that it has a number of tools available to neighborhood residents, hosts, guests and law enforcement to speak with unauthorized entities on its listings, including:

  • Neighborhood Support Line for local residents to report problems, such as a party going on at a home they believe is listed on Airbnb.
  • 24 Hour Security Line for hosts and guests to reach the company’s security team for support.
  • An audio sensor is provided for hosts, which can help get ahead of stories before they start while respecting the guest’s privacy.
  • A dedicated law enforcement support channel and specialized incident response team when there is an issue that may involve an Airbnb listing or stay.
