As Boston Blue preparing for the end of the fireworks season, Sonequa Martin-Green he scoffed at the difficult revelation.
“What a journey I’m taking as Lena Silver. There are threads of it at the beginning of the season [and] you’re going to start seeing us delving into really serious things,” said Martin-Green specifically Us Weekly for what is to come.
Martin-Green warned that “there are stories that are difficult to tell.”
“I applaud Brandon Sonnier – our runner – because the Silver family is based on his family. A lot of changes in Lena’s life are based on his life,” he continued. “So this is true and this is true. This is her experience. So I’m very happy that people saw it because it’s bad. It’s bad things that Lena is going to have to deal with all season long.”
On the Friday, April 10, episode of Blue Blood spinoff, Lena was seen asking her mother, Mae (Gloria Ruben), for more information about his biological father. Mae has been reluctant to open up about her past – and that will continue to be discussed on the show.
“It will have a negative impact. It is about time for this family to start uncovering serious things. We went there and went to those difficult places because this story is very important,” commented the actor. “I really hope that people will experience it and see examples of it in their own lives.”
Martin-Green recalled a number of conversations that erupted on screen.
“We are just one example of that. We are an example of hypocrisy but I think that sometimes examples are needed to be seen,” he continued. “Lena is a cool cat – as I like to call her – and it’s great when you see the layers with someone like that. She’s confident, she’s confident and she carries herself with ease and smoothness. It’s really good storytelling to see someone like that broken and humble.”
This one was presented to Us there Boston Blue premiered in October 2025. In addition to Danny’s (Donnie Wahlberg) new partner, Martin-Green’s character brought a new fictional family into the Blue Bloods universe: the Silvers.
“We’re standing on the shoulders of Blue Bloods and there are so many amazing characters and relationships,” he told us. “I don’t take that lightly.”
Martin-Green used this opportunity to take what Blue Bloods had created to pave the way for authentic and important storytelling. With Lena, Martin-Green was happy to expand the world with stories while providing details on how a Boston detective found his place while being part of a well-known police family.
“There were BPD detectives that really impacted me. It was amazing to be able to be there in person and see and then continue to have those conversations set up to be so important,” he shared. “We ask them for some of everything and they’re open and willing and cooperative and kind and generous with their difficult stories. I’ve been learning a lot about what it means to be a police officer. I’m drawing from every resource I have around me.”
The work did not stop with the scenes filmed by Martin-Green. He also spoke to him Us about building Lena’s wardrobe, saying, “It’s a conversation we’re still having about finding that balance because you don’t want to be in a situation where you stand out but you also want to be integrated. There’s something so beautiful to me about Lena but also understated. Suits are a necessity because I have to wear them. But it was about, let’s work hard at differentiating certain women. Your femininity and your softness because you have to have the protection of masculinity when you’re at work.”
He added: “You have to strengthen that sector because you just need the job. But if you are at home, you can soften and you can sink into that softness. I want to continue to grow in that and I appreciate that it is cooperation and that we are able to have these discussions.”
Looking ahead, Martin-Green is excited about where the game is headed.
“I can’t stress enough how grateful I am for telling a character-driven story in a procedural way. I had no idea and I’m so grateful. We cover a lot and a lot goes down at the end of the season,” he said. Us. “There are so many things that are open. There are so many questions and so many things are presented. Things are so big in the second half of the season that I feel like we will see the dissolution of all those things – or the confluence of all those things – in the coming episodes.
