“I’ve had the best experience in 22 years with NBC News,” Alexander said during his last broadcast in March 2026, announcing his surprise departure. “I couldn’t be more grateful … the leaders and mentors here who believed in me and gave me more opportunities than I could have hoped for.”
Alexander, who joined NBC News in 2004, began anchoring the weekend program of Today in 2018.
“It’s hard to believe, but I’ve been a part of the NBC family longer than I’ve had my own family,” Alexander added as he exited. “Studio 1A, being here, with this team and all the people you don’t see on TV, this is really my happy place.”

Peter Alexander said he ultimately decided to leave NBC News to spend more time with his wife, Alison Starlingand their two daughters.
“Because I live in Washington [D.C.]and it’s a journey,” he said in March 2026. “I’ve been away from home more than 80 nights in the last seven months, [and] more than 200 Friday nights away from my family in the last seven years.”
Alexander continued, “So, in this limited window before my daughters lose interest in living with me [and] It’s already happening fast, I’m eager to strike a better balance between my personal and professional life. … I’m happy because I was taught, ‘Family first, details second.’”
Alexander and Starling’s daughters, Ava and Emma, were 12 and 10 years old at the time.

Peter Alexander has yet to announce his next endeavor, but he has publicly revealed that he has no plans to retire from broadcast journalism anytime soon.
