Like, a person had to greenlight things like Food Fighta ridiculously bad movie filled with both an inexplicably star-studded cast and lunch meat. Jack and Jill? Yes, someone had to sign off on Adam Sandler wearing drag and playing his twin sister. Why does Hollywood keep making movies that even a baby can tell are perfect you are crazy? Simple: this is an industry that has epitomized the term “too crazy to work.” Which means, every now and then, a bonkers idea leads to a smash at the box office.
That happened back in 1996 with Space Jama film that looked bad on paper. It was designed to combine real characters with cartoons, something that only ever really worked in one film (Who introduced Roger Rabbit?). In addition, the main character was Michael Jordan, a person better known for dunking than acting. On top of that, the movie gave Bugs Bunny a love interest for a rabbit that may have been lab-engineered to work for fur. You’re crazy, aren’t you? Time Out Bugs
The foundation of Space Jam that an evil alien sends his minions to kidnap the Looney Tunes, in order to make them an attraction at his failing amusement park. It helps that Jordan is a naturally kind person whenever he’s on screen. He doesn’t take himself too seriously, and his breezy line delivery is always good for a laugh. At the same time, his presence is truly legitimate Space Jam like a real sports movie. And, if you grew up watching Jordan lead the Chicago Bulls to victory, there is an incredible joy in watching him play.
The Return of the King
I’m talking about action, Space Jam it has a lot of it. The basketball scenes are incredibly intense, pairing larger-than-life characters with what is arguably the most exciting game (sorry, Jordan, baseball can suck!). Plus, every scene is filled with the slapstick humor you’ve come to expect from Looney Tunes. While their antics were funny enough back in the ’90s, they seem even funnier now that movies featuring these actors are few and far between. In a world filled with increasingly dull and unfunny Pixar films, it’s nice to go back with a 2D film that keeps you laughing through every scene of its short running time.
