JD Vance vows that fuel prices will drop as the Iran conflict ends

The Trump administration is working to lower gas prices as motorists continue to pay more at the pump since the outbreak of war in Iran, Vice President JD Vance said Wednesday, noting that the increase is temporary.

Vance was at the manufacturing plant Engineering Design Services, Inc. in Auburn Hills, Michigan, where he was asked about rising gas prices.

“Gas prices are up, and we know they’re up,” Vance said. “We know people are getting hurt because of that, and we’re doing everything we can to make sure they stay down.

Vance said prices will eventually start to come down.

“The president said this, and I agree with it. This is a temporary contribution,” he said. “What happened under the Biden administration was that the price of gas was high for four years. The price of gas is high right now, and frankly, it’s not as high as it was during certain periods of the Biden administration.”

Prices have risen slightly following the US and Israeli attacks against Iran in recent weeks.

As of Wednesday, the average price for a gallon of gas was $3.84, up from $2.92 a month ago, according to AAA.

In recent weeks, the administration has worked with its allies to release hundreds of millions of barrels of oil from storage facilities in an effort to ease pressure on prices, Vance said.

Many American allies are “suffering” more than most Americans, Vance said.

“So as we have to focus on reducing fuel prices, the truth is, overseas they feel worse than us because we have taken measures to protect our energy economy.”

Once military operations against Iran are over, prices should drop back to previous levels, Vance said.

“We promise that when this conflict is about to end, when this program is close, we will see those electricity costs return to reality because that is what the president promised to do,” he said. “He introduced an agenda that dominates power. It has made us more secure in the face of these things. But yes, we have a rough road ahead of us in the next few weeks, but it’s temporary.”

The US produces more oil than any other country, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA). As of 2023, the latest data available, the US produces 1 million barrels per day, followed by Russia and Saudi Arabia.
