You can imagine Dungeons and Dragons: Fame Among Thieves could have been the biggest film of the decade, but instead the 2023 adventure was a disappointment, financially anyway. In Pits and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves The Greatest Tour of the Decade

Dungeons and Dragons: Fame Among Thieves it plays like your home campaign on the big screen. Edgin the Bard (Chris Pine) and his band of thieves are betrayed by the Red Wizard and framed for a crime they did not commit. After breaking out of prison with his friend Holga the Barbarian (Michelle Rodriguez) by using the aarakocra the only way a race should be used in your games, they get the band together for one last heist. The plan is to get revenge on the witch Sofina (Daisy Head) and Forge the Thief (Hugh Grant), rescue Edgin’s daughter, find the missing artifact, and bring his wife back to life. Simple plan, what could go wrong?

They hire Simon the Wizard (Justice Smith) and his ex, Doric the Druid (Sophia Lillis), who has done more to get the Druid accepted into gaming circles around the world with his wild chase sequences than years of villains and updates from Wizards of the Coast ever did. Together they somehow ride a dragon, rob a stagecoach, and survive a stage death match while bickering, arguing, and growing as people all at the same time. Writer/director duo Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daly (Sweets from Bones) have worked on real-life gaming experiences to make this story happen, there is no other explanation for how perfect it is.

While breaching the dragon’s lair, that’s exactly what happens when a bridge puzzle with an incredibly intricate meaning is shortened by a misstep, and solved by a portable porthole. A crowd-pleasing scene from the trailers of Edgin talking to corpses leads to the film’s best sequence, and one of the best comedy scenes to come out of Hollywood in years.

Dungeons and Dragons: Fame Among Thieves had a bad time coming out that month, March 2023, when Dungeons and Dragons’ parent company Hasbro managed to anger many fans by trying to charge for all uses of the game, from actual gameplay podcasts to homebrew creations. The boycott destroyed the film at the box office, but now that it has been lifted since Hasbro came to its senses and learned now to work with the fans of Matt Mercer and Brendan Lee Mulligan, it is seen as the biggest version of the game to hit the big screen.

Barring Hasbro’s missteps, there’s never a bad time for streaming Dungeons and Dragons: Fame Among Thieves. It’s a feel-good luxury movie and it’s now free to stream on Pluto TV.
