A 24-year-old former student athlete died in a boating accident in Massachusetts after he and his friends allegedly boarded a boat without permission before it crashed.

Elizabeth “Lizzie” Dankert, a former Union College soccer player, died after a speedboat crashed into a road near the runway at Logan International Airport around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to Massachusetts State Police.

The fatal crash drew attention after authorities said the group allegedly took a boat without permission hours after the boat club closed for the night.

Dankert and his friends were in Boston’s Seaport District that night when they boarded the Freedom Boat Club after the club closed, Lee Gordon, a spokesman for Brunswick Corporation, the club’s owner, told Fox News Digital.

Freedom Boat Club serves as a membership-based alternative to boat ownership at hundreds of locations around the world.

“The vessel involved in this incident was taken without authorization and operated without the knowledge and control of the Club, after the Club had closed for the day,” said Gordon. “This activity did not take place within the Club’s normal procedures or established regulations governing access and use of our vessels.

“We are cooperating fully with all the authorities involved as they work to look into the circumstances of the incident,” he added.

Boston EMS posted on Facebook that crews responded to the accident overnight in difficult conditions, including darkness and slippery rocks on the beach near the pier.

EMTs worked with firefighters from the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) to extricate four people from the rocks, including one critically injured patient.

The trio suffered non-life threatening injuries, according to WCVB.

“Lizzie was an impactful student-athlete during her four years at Union College,” school spokesman Phillip Wajda told Boston 25 in a statement.

“His passing is a great loss to our campus community,” he added.
