Ada may look easygoing and set in her ways, but that doesn’t mean she longs for some adventure and beauty in her life. That she makes an effort to find both is a source of humor and inspiration – no one realizes Ada’s dream about her except Ada. Manville is excellent as a character who could be strong or sensitive. He’s not, and that’s because of how Manville fits into the role.

‘Splash’ (1984)
When he was 8 years old, Allen Bauer (Tom Hanks) was sure he met the champion when he nearly drowned on Cape Cod. Twenty years later, he is proven right when he meets the same mermaid, all grown up. Her name is Madison (Daryl Hannah), and for reasons I’m still trying to understand, he can’t walk the earth for six days. If he lasts long enough, he’ll be human forever, which is why it’s a problem when Allen and Madison fall in love. He can join him in his underwater world, but he will never return to being human. Modern relationships have all kinds of problems, but it’s safe to say that none have the same problems that Allen and Madison have to deal with.
Splash is an unusual fish out of water romantic comedy that actually has a fish out of water as its main character. Hannah has some funny moments as a mostly mute learn to live, talk and walk like a human, while Hanks is tough as her badass suitor who can’t believe his childhood fantasy is real. John Candy he steals every scene he’s in as Allen’s womanizing brother, who will do anything to help his sibling finally get the girl.
Splash is streaming on Netflix.
