Sally Field he has spent decades choosing roles that dig for something authentic about the human experience. In a rare interview, the actor looked back at one famous part he refused – Annie Paradis in 1996. The First Wives Club – and explained why another, Mrs. Doubtfireit still affects families more than 30 years later.
Field was tight-lipped about his decision to transfer The First Wives Club.
“I loved all those characters,” Field said The Parade in an interview published on April 25. “But I refused.”

The reason was philosophical. For Field, the premise of the film didn’t reflect the kinds of stories she believes women deserve.
“I’ve always had a problem with older women wanting to be courted or wanting, like, you know, to have more sex with their husbands,” she said. “I feel like women have a lot to say, so that wasn’t my cup of tea.”
The First Wives Clubbased on the 1992 novel, it follows three college friends who reunite at the funeral of a fourth friend who committed suicide after her husband left her for a younger woman. All three discover that they share the same experience – each separated by a husband who left a younger partner. Rather than stay hurt, they make a deal and are determined to get revenge. Their plan isn’t just petty revenge – it’s about exposing the hypocrisy of their partners, restoring their self-esteem and regaining their independence. Along the way, they used clever tactics to undermine the people they loved socially and financially.
As the plot unfolds, the women realize that revenge alone is not enough. They transitioned to empowerment and solidarity, eventually using their resources to support other women in similar situations. The film combines comedy with a message about aging, sexism, friendship and reinventing oneself – and ends happily with a rousing rendition of “You Don’t Own Me,” celebrating their renewed confidence.

“I wouldn’t have been able to do that role, because I don’t sing and they all sing at the end.”
Diane Keaton finally got the role Annie, with Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn, Stockard Channing, Dan Hedaya, Victor Garber, Stephen Collins, Sarah Jessica Parker, Elizabeth Berkeley again Marcia Gay Harden to collect characters. The film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Musical or Comedy Score.
Field had no regrets about acting.
“I wouldn’t have been that good. I mean, it was okay for Keaton — not for me,” Field commented.
Keaton died on October 11, 2025, at the age of 79 from bacterial pneumonia.

“The film is about something true and important,” he said The Parade in an article published on April 26. “It’s a lot of fun, but it’s about the difficulties of divorce for children and how, in the end, mom and dad can divorce and the kids will still be okay. Kids need to know this — they need to know that sometimes divorce is the best thing because sometimes when moms and dads feel they need to stay together for the sake of the kids, it’s a bad message.”
That insight — that comedy can carry the truth that kids need to hear — helps explain why the film endures. It’s just not funny. It says something that families live by and tells them that the outcome can be positive.
