What is Teddi Mellencamp’s Stevens-Johnson Syndrome?

Teddy Mellencamp brings awareness to Stevens-Johnson syndrome after receiving the unexpected hospital visits.
“I thought I had the flu, and then I woke up one day all over my body, like this really bad rash,” Mellencamp said on the March 2026 episode of iHeartRadio’s. “Two ts in a Pod” a podcast. “How come, you can’t even tell it’s a bump because it’s almost like sores all over my body.”
Fortunately, Mellencamp’s doctors caught the skin condition early and she was treated with “injectable steroids and antibiotics” during her hospital stay.
The reason they said, ‘You have to stay in [the hospital],’ it’s because they can start to get better and then go back,” he said to the podcast cohost Tamra Judge. “I was very happy [to get out].”

What is Stevens-Johnson Syndrome?

It’s usually a reaction to a drug that starts with flu-like symptoms, followed by a painful rash that spreads and blisters. The top layer of the affected skin dies, sheds and begins to heal after a few days.
In her podcast episode, Mellencamp said she went to Tarzana Hospital in Southern California and was told “she was given a drug and I was allergic to it and it caused Stevens-Johnson Syndrome.”
What Are the Symptoms of Stevens-Johnson Syndrome?
One to three days before the rash appears, some patients may show the first symptoms of Stevens-Johnson syndrome, including fever, sore throat, fatigue and burning eyes.
As the condition progresses, other signs and symptoms include unexplained widespread skin pain. Blisters on your skin and the mucous membranes of the mouth, nose, eyes and genitals can also appear.

“I was so worried because the doctor hadn’t come that day. I had already asked a thousand times,” Mellencamp shared on her podcast. I say, ‘Please leave at 11 am on Sunday.’
He was finally able to be released even though he was “not feeling well.” At the same time, he was “happy” to have a family outside of the hospital.
How Is Stevens-Johnson Syndrome Treated?
The first and most important step in treating Stevens-Johnson syndrome is to stop taking any medications that may be causing it, says the Mayo Clinic.
Supportive care includes fluid and nutrition replacement, wound care and pain medication.
