Top 3 new movies to air this weekend (March 13-15)

It’s Oscar weekend, and Prime Video is now streaming some of this year’s nominees, like this one They are sinners with Michael B. Jordan.

The broadcaster also has previous Oscar-nominated films, such as Parenthood, Ron HowardThe irresistible comedy of 1989 Steve Martin, Rick Moranis again Keanu Reeves.

First of all Resident Evil The flick wasn’t an Oscar contender, but its fun mix of horror and action makes it worthy of airing two decades after its release.

And if the Academy ever gave out awards for campy entertainment, it’s zany satire Josie and the Pussycats you will definitely take a few sculptures.

‘Resident Evil’ (2002)

Usually, a video game movie adaptation stinks, especially when it changes almost everything about the source material that made it worth the adaptation in the first place. But in 2002 Resident Evil it’s a strange thing — it’s an adaptation that removes much of the original game’s plot, characters and tone, but somehow it’s still fun to watch. Thank you actor-turned-actor Milla Jovovich therefore; like the new character Alice, she’s silly fun as the reluctant heroine who wears a slinky red dress while shooting zombies and constantly kicking a roundhouse at air-eating dogs. That happens to me too.

Alice is stuck in a mansion in Raccoon City with no memory of her past. Things take a turn for the worse when a commando team working for the Umbrella Corporation enters the mansion and warns him of a virus outbreak that has turned almost everyone into zombies. Alice has no choice but to join her gun-wielding friends, but can she trust the people who work for Umbrella, who seem to be the cause of the virus that caused the damage they were in in the first place?

‘Parent’ (1989)

Growing up is hard, but becoming an adult is even harder. That’s what Gil Buckman (Steve Martin) you get everything ParenthoodRon Howard’s winning comedy from 1989 that still sounds fresh and funny in 2026. Gil and his siblings, Helen (Dianne Wiest) and Susan (Harley Jane Kozack), navigate the difficult times of raising children while also somehow trying to find enough time and energy to devote to their love lives. When my black sheep brother Larry (Tom Hulce) returns with her child, the Buckman family’s strong bonds are tested.

It was later adapted into a successful NBC drama series Craig T. Nelson, Parenthood it’s as funny as it gets. The film’s ensemble cast is stunning, starring Oscar-nominated Wiest as a divorced mother at the end of her rope with a young child. Joaquin Phoenix (then called Leaf) as his estranged son. Martin’s comedic powers work well for Gil, who has to stay on top of things or think everything – and everyone – is going to fall apart. The film speaks hard truths about what it costs to be a good parent, but it sugarcoats that with some nice bits of comedy (see the scene where Martin has to pretend to be a cowboy to please his son) and irresistible. Randy Newman sound track.

‘Josie and the Pussycats’ (2001)

When the super-successful boy band DuJour appears to have died in a plane crash, fat music producer Wyatt Frame (Alan Cumming) needs a new cash cow to milk. You find it in Riverdale with Josie and the Pussycats, an all-female rock band led by singer Josie (Rachael Leigh Cook) and bassist Valerie (Rosario Dawson) and black drum Melody (Tara Reid).

The band is hugely popular, but their lives are soon in danger when they uncover a huge conspiracy led by label owner Fiona (Parker Posey). Can Josie and her pussy posses unmask Fiona, save the world’s young people from corrupt corporations and find success in love and pop music?

A big dud on its first release, Josie and the Pussycats has become a cult film favorite. It’s not hard to see why: its quirky plot, inconsistent dialogue and top-notch performances make it fun to watch and re-watch. Like any good bad movie, it’s the villains that make it all worthwhile, and Cumming and Posey are a match made in baddie heaven.
