Tiger Woods’ arrest on DUI-related charges has sparked debate about whether the golf champion should face a suspension.

Woods’ crash on Friday is the fourth major auto accident for a professional golfer since 2009. In 2017, he was found driving under the influence of drugs and sleeping in his car, stopped on the road. He said it was because of a reaction to the pills.

“I don’t like sugarcoating things. And the way I look at it, there should be some kind of penalty or disqualification or some kind of suspension,” Mark Lye, a former PGA golfer, said Saturday on “Fox & Friends Weekend.”

Woods was arrested in Jupiter Island, Florida, where police say he was driving at a “high rate of speed” when he clipped another car, causing his car to roll over. Authorities say he registered a 0.00 on the breathalyzer, indicating alcohol consumption, but refused a urine test and was charged with DUI and criminal damage to property.

“I’m just wondering where we are with that behavior that he learned to say on the golf course [going to] stick to his personal life. Obviously, he has demons going on,” Lye said.

Lye called for “accountability” from Woods and asked if it was time for him to be suspended from the sport. Lye noted that professional golfers’ contracts often include a “conduct clause” and warned that Woods could face further consequences if no action is taken.

Lye is not alone in his concerns about Woods and those around him, however. Doug Bell, a PGA Tour broadcaster, said he was thankful no one was hurt.

“It’s hard to see what happened yesterday. It’s a pattern,” Bell said.

“Let’s hope this leads to something good for one of the greatest athletes and figures this world has seen in a long time,” he added.

“He’s going through something that we don’t know what’s going on inside his head, the pain he feels from every operation,” Bell said, adding that leaving the game “may be the best thing.”

Woods was released from jail Friday night. In a photo released hours after his arrest, his eyes appeared red.

President Donald Trump weighed in on the arrest of his “very close friend,” noting that the athlete has had “hard times.”

Woods’ team did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital.
