Whenever someone says they’re an anime fan, a good follow-up is, “what anime?” Anime is a media that simply means animated shows or movies from Japan, and within that there are countless other genres including Shonen (One piece, Demon Slayer), Support (Overlord, Sword Art Online), Romance (The Apothecary Diaries), Slice of life (Your name), and then there are different styles in between all of that, including the one that people bring up when they want to tear anime down as mindless fanservice: ecchi.
Ecchi anime is incredibly uplifting. This is where you’ll find male-staring images of every single female character, and adult-themed shows that are immature because they often have childish humor in them. That’s why it’s surprising to browse through Disney+ and find out that in 2010 High School of the Dead available for streaming.
High School Of The Dead Is A Very Popular Ecchi Series

High School of the Dead it’s one of the most infamous anime of all time because of its vague, gratuitous fan service that you’ll either love or hate within the first five minutes. The plot is about a group of high school students trying to survive the zombie apocalypse, and rightly so The Walking Deadthe real danger is the total collapse of society. It’s not just the support systems they take for granted, but their behavior and ethics, all of which are being tested. Within minutes of his introduction, you’ll think that teacher Koichi Shido is among history’s greatest villains when his inner monologue reveals that he wants to single-handedly reshape society from above.

The first episode of High School of the Dead centers around Takashi and Rei, both second-year students at Fujimi High School, who become the leaders of a group of survivors. Some of the students get the chance to show off the skills they learned in clubs (the kendo club is really helpful), or study abroad (a sniper who spent a month in America learned to shoot a member of the Delta Force), while others quickly become fodder for the slow team.
There is one thread early on that tells you all you need to know about it High School of the Dead. Two girls running zombies, talking about how they will be best friends forever, when one of them is caught by a zombie. As she’s being pulled by the waist, her skirt rides up letting you know that this is totally ecchi, and at the same time, her BFF yells at her to let go, and even steps on his hand, leaving her to die. Violence, language, fan service, and a dark sense of humor. That’s the whole series in one 20-second scene.
The Most Banned Anime of All Time

High School of the Dead it is not for everyone. If you keep up with the fan service, you’ll find that it’s a zombie apocalypse anime with two great leads in Takashi and Rei, both of whom are not allowed to grow and develop as society crumbles around them. Getting to the good parts of the plot requires going through the worst “plot” that should be listed in the dictionary next to “male gaze.”
Sex and violence found in every episode of High school for the dead enough for the Chinese government to ban it from the country in 2015. Manga was also banned from many libraries and schools before staff learned that not all manga is for children. Sadly, for those who enjoyed the series, creator Daisuke Saito passed away in 2017, and out of respect, the publisher quietly canceled the manga and anime, leaving it forever with only one season.

High School of the Dead it’s one of those animes that you’ll either love or hate, and a lot of it depends on your personal humor and how you like your horror. If you’re a fan of 70s and 80s horror, you’ll find the series strikes a similar tone, but if you’re not and you’re curious about it, think twice because the level of fan service can be hard to handle if you’re not on the same wavelength.
