After years of anxious waiting, the first Spider-Man: A New Day the trailer is here, and it’s everything fans have been waiting for. Unlike the comic book arc it’s named after, the movie comes after a crowd-pleasing blockbuster No Way Home, which was stuffed in the gut with spider-nostalgia. The two minute and 40 second trailer released today is chock full of references not to the movies, but to the comics, and fans are already losing their minds.
A New Day in a Nutshell for Peter Parker
The trailer opens with Tom Holland’s Peter Parker sadly watching a video of his friend, Ned (Jacob Batalon), and the love of his life, MJ (Zendaya, the love of Tom Holland), both of whom have surprisingly forgotten who Peter Parker is. As the trailer reveals, the two are still close to Peter, who walked down the hall from MJ and saw her making out with a new guy, played by. Ashoka’s Emand Esfandi. We don’t read his name, but if it’s Paul, you won’t hear the end of it from comic fans.
Although no one is more important than Paul, the Brand new Day the trailer shows Spider-Man and The Punisher (Jon Bernthal) teaming up, sort of, complete with the Punisher’s van getting in on the action. Kevin Feige has said that this version of The Punisher will be slightly different compared to the R-rated version from which it came Daredevilbut it’s still a fun group to finally see on the big screen.
Brand new Day and it seems that Peter is sick, or deranged, during the scene where his powers fail as he wakes up from the web cocoon. There are a few comic storylines this could be a reference to, though the most likely is “The Other.” At that point in the story, Peter’s sick, he wakes up in a cocoon, sheds his body, like a reptile sheds its skin, and oh yes, he has to face Morlun, an immortal spider eating monster. Mark Ruffalo’s appearance as Dr. Banner points to this, as in the comics, Peter goes to Mr. Fantastic and Hank Pym for help.
What Brand new Day the trailer makes it clear that the number of bad people seen during the movie. We see Boomerang, Tarantula (guy with a nail sticking out of his foot), Scorpion finally shows up, and ironically, the Hand ninjas make their big screen debut in the MCU. Can be seen in the trailer Charlie Cox, as Matt Murdock or as Daredevil, Marvin Jones III as Tombstone is not seen, and Stranger Things star Sadie Sink is nowhere to be found.
We still don’t know who Sadie Sink is playing for Brand new Day. She could be Firestar, Typhoid Mary, Screwball, or even Carlie Cooper, Peter’s other redheaded girlfriend. It’s a testament to Disney’s ability to keep secrets that we’re so close to release and still don’t know. That and Tom Holland, the infamous leaker, has been kept away from every microphone.
The MCU has been treading water ever since Deadpool and Wolverine. Thunder, Captain America: Brave New Worldagain Fantastic Four it’s all been pulled from a dwindling return that puts the future of the MCU in Tom Holland’s hands. Again.
Spider-Man: A New Day will hit theaters on July 31.
