Tech giants back Trump’s promise on AI data center electricity costs

Tech giants backed President Donald Trump’s promise to pay more for electricity to run AI-hungry data centers ahead of his signature on Wednesday.

Google, Microsoft, Meta, Oracle, xAI, OpenAI and Amazon will join Trump at the White House to sign the Ratepayer Protection Pledge, an agreement to ensure that the costs of infrastructure and power delivery of data centers are not passed on to the public, according to a White House official.

The pledge also obliges these companies to hire and train workers from the communities where the data centers are built and operated, the official said.

US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the pledge would help stop the rise in electricity prices that began during the Biden administration, and also “make sure the United States wins the AI race.”

“We will continue to partner with technology leaders to strengthen America’s competitiveness, while keeping energy costs low for hard-working families,” Wright said.

The executives of the technology companies that will sign the pledge highly praised the Trump plan, which aims to contribute to reducing electricity costs, a strong grid infrastructure and strengthening the power of the grid during emergencies.

“We welcome the administration’s leadership on this issue and support the commitments, which establish a clear foundation for protecting taxpayers while enabling responsible, long-term partnerships to strengthen the grid and the communities where data centers operate,” said Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman.

Brad Smith, vice chairman and president of Microsoft, said the pledge is “an important step,” echoing his company’s call for the Trump administration to “ensure that data centers do not contribute to higher electricity prices for consumers.”
