Democratic darling and Texas Senate candidate James Talarico is under fire after it was discovered that, as a public school teacher in San Antonio, he had his sixth graders write “Obama memes” in celebration of his election.

Corey DeAngelis, a school choice and research advocate at the Heritage Foundation, called the allocation “inappropriate” for the Texas Senate hopeful.

In Talarico’s November 13, 2012 Facebook post, he announced, “Today, we finished writing our Obama memoir,” explaining that “students wrote an election night memoir from the perspective of an Obama family member.”

One of the memorabilia Talarico shared showed one of her students writing as if she were former President Barack Obama’s child, saying, “I cried when my dad gave his speech” and praising “those beautiful words that came out of his mouth” when he spoke on election night.

The Democratic Party has high hopes that Talarico, who represents a progressive state, can turn a critical Senate seat blue and become the first Democratic candidate in Texas in decades. However, since he won the party’s nomination, many have complained about his history of ongoing speeches, including saying that “God is not binary” and using the Bible to justify abortion.

In another Facebook post, dated Nov. 16, 2012, Talarico shared a photo of a poster board filled with Obama memorabilia and a banner reading “Mr. Talarico’s Wall of Fame.” The exhibit featured more than a dozen memorabilia and photos of Obama and his family, as well as presidential seals and the Obama campaign logo. Talarico commented, “Our Wall of Fame has been updated with our amazing Obama Family Memoirs!”

The Obama memos aren’t the only posts from Talarico’s teacher account to be critical. Others also took issue with the September 14, 2011 post, which shows the “free thinker” class. Among the figures labeled as liberal intellectuals are Obama, Bill Gates, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro.

Other figures included in the exhibition ranged from Ludwig van Beethoven to Frida Kahlo to Jay-Z. Harry Potter author JK Rowling is also featured. Not included, however, were any Republican or conservative leaders.

Others also criticized Talarico on September 4, 2012, when he encouraged students to watch the Democratic National Convention to see Castro, the former mayor of San Antonio, give a keynote speech.

Conservative commentator Steve Guest criticized Talarico for this, writing in X, “What Talarico did was ‘teacher.'”

The National Republican Senatorial Committee also complained, writing, “James Talarico had his public school students write ‘Obama memoirs’ and encouraged them to watch the DNC. What else was he telling the Texas kids in his class?”

A spokesperson for Talarico responded to conservative critics in a statement to Fox News Digital.

“John Cornyn, Ken Paxton, and the billionaires who support them fear James Talarico for good reason: our campaign is building an organization ready to change the politics of this state and give power back to working people,” said press secretary JT Ennis. “While they are wasting their time looking for old attacks to mislead Texans, we are rallying the people of Texas to win in November.”

Talarico will face incumbent Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, or state Attorney General Ken Paxton this November. Cornyn and Paxton are currently locked in a tough competition that will come to a head in May.
